ಶ್ರೀ ರೇಣುಕಾ ಯಲ್ಲಮ್ಮ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು 1514 ರಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಯಬಾಗಿನ ಬೋಮಪ್ಪ ನಾಯಕ್ ಎಂಬುವನಿಂದ ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದೆ. ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿರುವ ಪುರಾತತ್ವ ಇಲಾಖೆಯ ಪುರಾವೆಗಳ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಈ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ, ರಾಷ್ತ್ರಕೂಟರ ಪೂರ್ವಾರ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಥವಾ ಚಾಲುಕ್ಯರ ಉತ್ತರಾರ್ಧದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಾಗಲೇ ಒಂದು ದೇವಾಲಯವಿತ್ತೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದು ಬರುತ್ತದೆ (8 ನೆೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಮಧ್ಯದಿಂದ 11 ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಮಧ್ಯದವರೆಗೆ). ಇಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಬೃಹತ್ ಶಿಲೆಯ ಗೋರಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ಹಳೆಯದೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದಲ್ಲದೆ, ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಮೇಲೆ ಕ್ರಿ ಪೂ 3 ನೆೇ ಶತಮಾನದಿಂದ ಕ್ರಿ ಶ 3 ನೆೇ ಶತಮಾನದ್ದೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದುಬರುವ ಮಣ್ಣಿನ ಮಡಿಕೆಗಳ ಅವಶೇಷಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬಹುದಾಗಿದೆ. ಎಲ್ಲಮ್ಮನ ಭಕ್ತರ ಸಮೂಹವು ಚಾಲುಕ್ಯರ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲೂ ಇತ್ತೆಂಬುದು ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು 1975 ರಿಂದ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಸರ್ಕಾರದ ಆಡಳಿತದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಸರಕಾರದ ರಾಜ್ಯಪತ್ರದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಈ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಪೂಜೆಗೊಳ್ಳುವ ದೇವಿಯು, ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ಅವತಾರವಾದ ಪರಶುರಾಮನ ತಾಯಿಯೆಂದು, ಜಮದಗ್ನಿ ಋಷಿಗಳ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯೆಂದೂ ಹೇಳಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಿಯನ್ನು ಸಪ್ತ ಮಾತೃಕೆಯರಲ್ಲೊಬ್ಬಳೆಂದು, ಏಳು ಮಕ್ಕಳ ತಾಯಿ ಎಂದೂ ಪೂಜಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. The temple was built in 1514 by Bomappa Naik of Raybag. According to archaeological evidence found around the temple, a temple existed here either during the early Rashtrakuta or late Chalukyan period from the mid-8th to the mid-11th centuries. The megalithic tombs found here are dated to a much earlier period. Also seen on the hill are potsherds of early historic redware dated to the 3rd century BC to the 3rd century AD. It is believed that the Yellamma fertility cult was prevalent here even during the Chalukyan period, following their taking possession of this region from the Kadambas of Banavasi. The temple has been under the management of the Government of Karnataka since 1975. According to the government gazetteer, the goddess worshiped in the temple is associated with Parasurama's (an incarnation of Vishnu) mother Renuka, the wife of the sage Jamadagni. She is revered as one of the Saptamatrika or seven divine mothers, who protected the earth and its rulers. The goddess is also known as Yelumakkaltai, meaning "the mother of seven children".
