ಮಹರ್ಷಿ ಋಷ್ಯಶೃಂಗರು, ಅಯೋಧ್ಯಾರಾಜ ದಶರಥನ ಪುತ್ರಿ ಶಾಂತಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ವಿವಾಹವಾದ ನಂತರ ದಕ್ಷಿಣದ ಪ್ರಾಂತಗಳಿಗೆ ತೆರಳಿದರು. ಈಗಿನ ಸಹ್ಯಾದ್ರಿಪರ್ವತಶ್ರೇಣಿಯ ನರಸಿಂಹಪರ್ವತದಲ್ಲಿ ದೀರ್ಘತಪವನ್ನಾಚರಿಸಿದರು. ಶ್ರೀ ನರಸಿಂಹಸ್ವಾಮಿಯು ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷನಾಗಿ ಶಿವಪಂಚಾಕ್ಷರೀ ಮಂತ್ರವನ್ನು ಉಪದೇಶಿಸಿ ಚಂದ್ರಮೌಳೇಶ್ವರನನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರೆಸಲು ಹೇಳಿದನು. ಋಷ್ಯಶೃಂಗರು ಶಿವದರ್ಶನದವರೆಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರೆಸಿದರು. ಚಂದ್ರಮೌಳೇಶ್ವರನ ದರ್ಶನವಾದ ಕೂಡಲೇ, ಉದ್ವೇಗದ ಭರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಗಲಿಬಿಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ “ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಸೇರು” ಎಂದುಬಿಟ್ಟರು. ದಯಾಮಯನಾದ ಚಂದ್ರಮೌಳೇಶ್ವರನು ಶಿವಲಿಂಗದ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಯೊಡನೆ ಅದೇ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಐಕ್ಯನಾದನು. ಇದರಿಂದಾಗಿ, ಈ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗಕ್ಕೆ ಶ್ರೀ ಋಷ್ಯಶೃಂಗೇಶ್ವರ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಬಂದಿತು. ಕಿಗ್ಗಾ ಹೆಸರಿನ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆ: ಕಗ್ಗವೆಂದರೆ ಗಲಿಬಿಲಿಯೆನ್ನುವ ಅರ್ಥವಿರುವ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ, ಈ ಸ್ಥಳದ ಹೆಸರು ಕಿಗ್ಗಾ ಎಂದು ಬದಲಾಗಿದೆಯೆನ್ನುವುದು ಸ್ಥಳೀಯರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯವಾಗಿದೆ. Maharshi RushyaShrunga is said to have travelled to the southern region of India after his marriage to Shanta, the daughter of King Dasharath of Ayodhya. He performed a deep penance in the tall mountain presently called Narasimha Parvata in the Sahyadri mountain ranges. Lord Narasimha appeared before him and advised the Shivapanchakshari Mantra. The sage continued his penance until Lord Shiva gave him Darshan in the form of Chandramouleshwara. In the excitement and confusion, Rushyashrunga says, “Join me” to Chandramouleshwara. Lord Shiva decided to take the form of Shivalinga with Maharshi Rushyashrunga in the same place. The local belief is that the word Kigga has been derived from the Kannada word “Kagga”. Kagga means confusion.

ಶ್ರೀ ಋಷ್ಯಶೃಂಗೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಬಾದಾಮಿಯ ಚಾಲುಕ್ಯರು ಸುಮಾರು ಏಳನೆಯ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿರುವ ದೇವಾಲಯವೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಹೊಯ್ಸಳರು, ಚೌಟರು, ವಿಜಯನಗರದರಸರೇ ಮೊದಲಾದವರ ಕಾಲ್ದಲ್ಲಿ, ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಕಂಡಿದೆ ಎಂದು ತಜ್ಞರು ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಪಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. Sri Rushyashrungeshwara temple is believed to be a 7th Century CE construction by Chalukyas of Badami. Several dynasties like Hoysalas, Chowtas, and kings of Vijayanagar Empire may have contributed for the development of the temple.
