Dhruva was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, who undertook an arduous penance at the age of five with a desire to get his right over the throne of his father. However, when Lord Vishnu appeared in front of him, Dhruva forgot the purpose for which he had undertaken the penance. Lord Vishnu blessed him with His Conch. Dhruva received a royal welcome when he returned to his kingdom. He ascended the throne at the age of six years. Later Dhruva became a Pole Star. Dhruva-stuti finds mention in Sri Vishnu Purana and also Bhagavata Purana. Lord Vishnu granted the wish of Dhruva and decreed that the boy would attain Dhruvapada - a celestial state would not even be touched by Mahapralaya or final cataclysm. North Pole Star is called Dhruva Nakshatra in Sanskrit literature. Since this is an official post - Dhruvaraja thought that he would not be entitled to attain Moksha, the desired goal of every soul. He wanted to know the attributes of God in a disciplined manner during a lifetime in a place designated for the purpose in the universe i.e. Bharata. Accordingly, Dhruvaraja came down to the earth in an Amsha and assumed Sanyasa to complete his Sadana and goes by the name Sri Sripadaraja.
Lakshminarayana was the name of Sripadaraja before being ordained into sainthood. He was born in 1404 to Sheshagiri and Tayamma at a small village called Abbur near Chennapatna, which is now famous for wooden handicrafts. Lakshminarayana was very popular in his village even as a boy for his wisdom and intelligence. Once, when he was going with his cows for grazing in the forest, he heard some strange sound and on turning in the direction of that sound, he saw a palanquin being brought. When the palanquin came to him, a saint sitting in the palanquin enquired with Lakshminarayana as to what was the distance from that point to the nearest village. Instead of giving a direct reply, the boy said that since he, along with his friends, was playing still in the open, the indication was that the village was quite nearby. Astonished by the wit of the boy and his eloquence, courage and intelligence of the boy, the saint blessed the boy with Mantrakshate. The saint had foreseen that the boy would one day be a great person. The boy was none other than Sripadaraja. Later, Sripadaraja was a beloved student of Sri Swarnavarna Tirtharu.
