ಚಿಕ್ಕಬಳ್ಳಾಪುರ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ ಗೌರಿಬಿದನೂರು ತಾಲ್ಲೂಕಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಪುರಾಣ ಹಾಗೂ ಇತಿಹಾಸ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಸ್ಥಳ “ವಿದುರಾಶ್ವತ್ಥ”ವು ಗೌರಿಬಿದನೂರಿನ ಉತ್ತರಕ್ಕೆ ಸುಮಾರು 6 ಕಿ.ಮೀ. ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಈ ಊರಿನ ಬಳಿ ಇರುವ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಕುರುಗೋಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ದ್ವಾಪರ ಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಮೈತ್ರೇಯ ಋಷಿಗಳಿಂದ ನೀಡಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿತೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುವ ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥ ವೃಕ್ಷವೊಂದಿದೆ. ಈ ವೃಕ್ಷವು ಮಹಾಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ವಿದುರನಿಂದ ಪೂಜಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿತ್ತೆಂದು ಪುರಾಣಗಳಿಂದ ತಿಳಿದುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದಲೇ ಈ ಊರಿಗೆ ವಿದುರಾಶ್ವತ್ಥ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಬಂದಿದೆ. Vidurashwattha tree, which has a glorious history and Puranic relevance, is at a distance of six km from taluk headquarters Gauribidanur, towards north, in Chikkaballapur district, Karnataka, India. The Vidurashwattha tree at a tiny village called Dodda Kurugodu is said to be existing from Dwapara Yuga. It is believed that Sage Maitreya planted this tree at the end of Dwapara Yuga and was subsequently worshipped by Vidura, the uncle of Dharmaraya and Duryodhana.

ದ್ವಾಪರ ಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ದೃತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರನ ಮಗನಾಗಿದ್ದ ದುರ್ಯೋಧನನ ದುರಾಡಳಿತವನ್ನು ಸಹಿಸಲಾಗದೆ, ಆತನ ಚಿಕ್ಕಪ್ಪನಾಗಿದ್ದ ವಿದುರನು ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ತೊರೆದು ತನ್ನ ಗುರು ಮೈತ್ರೇಯ ಮುನಿಯ ಆಶ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲ ಕಾಲ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೈತ್ರೇಯ ಮುನಿಗಳು ಉತ್ತರ ಪಿನಾಕಿನಿ ನದಿಯ ಕಡೆಗೆ ತೀರ್ಥಯಾತ್ರೆ ಹೊರಟಾಗ, ಅವರ ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಿದುರನೂ ಹೊರಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಸಂಧ್ಯಾಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುನಿಗಳು ನದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ನಾನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥವೃಕ್ಷದ ಸಸಿಯೊಂದು ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ತೇಲುತ್ತಾ ಬಂದು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ. ತ್ರಿಕಾಲ ಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳದ ಮುನಿಗಳು ಅದನ್ನು ಭಗವಂತನ ಪ್ರಸಾದವೆಂದು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿ, ನದೀ ತೀರದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಟ್ಟು ನೀರೆರೆಯುವಂತೆ ವಿದುರನಿಗೆ ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆ ಸಸಿಯೊಳಗೆ ಮೈತ್ರೆಯರು ತ್ರಿಮೂರ್ತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಆವಾಹನೆಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ಭಕ್ತಿ , ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆಯಿಂದ ಪೂಜಿಸಿದರೆ ಮೋಕ್ಷ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ವಿದುರನನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು, ಮುನಿಗಳು ಏಕಾಂಗಿಯಾಗಿ ತೀರ್ಥಯಾತ್ರೆ ಮುಂದುವರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ನಂತರ, ವಿದುರನು ಭಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಆ ವೃಕ್ಷವನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಇದ್ದುಬಿಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಕಾಲಕ್ರಮೇಣ, ಅದು ದೊಡ್ಡ ವೃಕ್ಷವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ವಿದುರನು ಅದನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸುತ್ತಲೇ ಮೋಕ್ಷ ಪಡೆದನಾದ್ದರಿಂದ, ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವನ್ನು "ವಿದುರಾಶ್ವತ್ಥ” ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವೆಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಶಾಸನ – ಪುರಾಣಗಳಲ್ಲೂ, ಇದನ್ನು ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿದುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥ ವೃಕ್ಷದ ಬುಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಸಣ್ಣ ಮತ್ತು ಸುಂದರ ನಾಗರ ಕಲ್ಲುಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. According to a legend, during Dwaparayuga, Vidura was disgusted with the atrocious administration of the kingdom by Duryodhana, the son of Dhrutarashtra, and sets off on a pilgrimage. He was then joined by Sage Maitreya. Once, Sage Maitreya was having bath in Uttara Pinakini River. At that time, a plant of Ashwattha came floating in the water and stopped near the sage. Sage Maitreya took it and handed it over to Vidura, advising him to nurture and worship it. The sage, after advising Vidura in that way, left the former behind and continued his pilgrimage. Vidura watered the plant and when it grew up, he kept offering worship to the holy tree till attaining salvation. Since Vidura attained salvation by worshipping this Ashwattha Tree on the banks of Uttara Pinakini, this came to be known as Vidurashwattha. A temple dedicated to Lord Ashwatthanarayana established near the Ashwattha tree is therefore considered to be holy. Hundreds of tiny and beautiful stone idols of King Cobra, which are considered holy and auspicious, have been installed around the Vidurashwattha tree.

ಉತ್ತರ ಪಿನಾಕಿನಿ ನದಿಯ ಎಡದಂಡೆಯ ಮೇಲಿರುವ ಈ ಅಶ್ವಥ ವೃಕ್ಷ ಪೂಜನೀಯವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಬರುವ ಭಕ್ತರು ಈ ವೃಕ್ಷವನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸುವುದು ಪ್ರತೀತಿ. ಮಕ್ಕಳಾಗದವರು, ನಾಗದೋಷ ಹಾಗೂ ಇನ್ನಿತರ ನಾಗ ಸಂಬಂಧಿ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳಿಂದ ಮುಕ್ತಿಹೊಂದಲು ಈ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಬೇಟಿ ನೀಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈ ವೃಕ್ಷದ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಿರುವ ಸಾವಿರಾರು ನಾಗರಕಲ್ಲುಗಳೇ ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ. ಆಂಧ್ರಪ್ರದೇಶ ಹಾಗೂ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ನೂರಾರು ಭಕ್ತರು ನಿತ್ಯ ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಆಗಮಿಸಿ ವೃಕ್ಷವನ್ನು ಹಾಗೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿರುವ ದೇವರುಗಳನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. The Ashwattha Tree on the banks of Uttara Pinakini is holy and auspicious. Childless couple, persons with Naga Dosha and other Naga-related dificiencies visit this Sri Ashwatthanarayana temple and get their desires or prayers fulfilled. Hundreds of Naga idols installed around Sri Vidurashwattha bear testimony for this fact. People from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and other southern States visit this holy place in large number and offer worship here.

ಈ ವೃಕ್ಷದ ಸುತ್ತ ಪ್ರಾಕರವಿದ್ದು, ದೇವಾಲಯ ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಂತೆಯೇ ಮೊದಲು ಅಭೀಷ್ಟ ಸಿದ್ಧಿ ಗಣಪತಿಯ ದರ್ಶನವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಮೃತಶಿಲೆಯಿಂದ ಕೆತ್ತಲಾಗಿರುವ ಬಲಮುರಿ ಗಣಪನ ಮೂರ್ತಿ ಸುಂದರವಾಗಿದೆ. ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲೇ ಇರುವ ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥನಾರಾಯಣ ಗುಡಿ ಪ್ರಧಾನವಾದದ್ದು. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಭವಾನಿಶಂಕರ, ಶ್ರೀರಾಮ, ವೀರಾಂಜುನೇಯಸ್ವಾಮಿ, ಶ್ರೀದೇವಿ, ಭೂದೇವಿ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳೂ ಇವೆ. ಈ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಹಿಂದೆ ಹಚ್ಚ ಹಸಿರಿನಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿರುವ “ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ಸಂಗ್ರಾಮ” ಉದ್ಯಾನವನ ಹಾಗೂ ಗ್ರಂಥಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. There is a spacious corridor around the Vidurashwattha tree and immediately on entering Sri Ashwatthanarayana temple here, a beautiful idol of Abheeshta Siddhi Ganapati can be seen. The Ashwatthanarayana temple by its side is the main shrine in this place. There are temples dedicated to Srirama, Bhavanishankara, Veeranjaneya, Sridevi, Bhoodevi in the vicinity. Behind the temple, there is a lush green park called Swatantra Sangrama and a Library too.
