ಕಾಶೀಪಟ್ಟಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವ-ಪಾರ್ವತಿಯರ ವಿವಾಹ ಮಹೋತ್ಸವದ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ, ಸಮಸ್ತ ದೇವತೆಗಳೂ, ಋಷಿ ಮುನಿಗಳೂ ಗಂದರ್ವರೂ, ಕಿನ್ನರ-ಕಿಂಪುರುಷರೂ ನೆರೆದಿದ್ದರು. ಇದರ ಪರಿಣಾಮವಾಗಿ, ಉತ್ತರದ ಭೂಮಿಯು ಕುಸಿಯಲಾರಂಭವಾಯಿತು. ಆಗ ಪರಮಶಿವನು, ಭೂಭಾರವನ್ನು ಕಡಿಮೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಚಿಂತಿಸಿ, ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯಮುನಿಗಳನ್ನು ದಕ್ಷಿಣದೇಶಕ್ಕೆ ತೆರಳಲು ಆಜ್ಞಾಪಿಸಿದನು. ಮಹರ್ಷಿ ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯರು ಶಿವನ ಆಜ್ಞೆಯನ್ನು ಪಾಲಿಸಲು ಮುಂದಾಗಿ, ವರವೊಂದನ್ನು ಬೇಡಿದರು. ತಾವು ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವ-ಪಾರ್ವತಿಯರ ವಿವಾಹವು ಎಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತರೂ ಕಾಣಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ವಿನಂತಿಸಿದರು. ಪರಶಿವನು ಆಗಲೆಂದನು. ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯರು ಈಗಿನ ಕಳಸಾ ಪ್ರಾಂತದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತು ಮದುವೆಯ ದೃಶ್ಯವನ್ನು ಆನಂದಿಸಿದರು. ಆಗ ಅವರ ಕಲಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವೊಂದು ಮೂಡಿತು. ತಮ್ಮ ಪಯಣದ ಮಜಲಿನ ಕುರುಹಾಗಿ, ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಆ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಿದರು. The wedding of Parvati and Parameshwara was held in Kasi, and all the gods and Rishis and celestials assembled there. This caused the Northern plate to go down by the sheer weight of the divine personages. Lord Shiva requested Sage Agasthya to go south to create a balance. Sage Agasthya agreed, but expressed a wish to still witness the wedding. Lord Shiva granted him a boon saying wherever he halted and thought about it, he would be able to see the wedding ceremonies as if he were directly present. Sage Agasthya halted at Kalasa, and saw the wedding from here. A Shiva Linga appeared out of his Kalasha, the pot. He installed the Shiva Linga in this region to commemorate the occasion.

Sri Kalasheshwara temple located on a small hillock has been built using the soapstone and resembles the early Hoysala style of architecture. When viewed from far, the temple top resembles a pot.
