Sri Chamundeshwari Temple at the top of Chamundi Hill, which is about 13 km away from Mysuru, has great historical relevance and puranic background. The temple enjoys the patronage of the Wadeyars’ family, the erstwhile rulers of the Mysore province. The sitting deity, Sri Chamundeswari, is considered to be the fierce or ferocious form of Durga Devi, which she assumed for slaying the demons Chanda and Munda and Mahishasura, the buffalo-headed demon. ಮೈಸೂರುನಿಂದ ಸುಮಾರು 13ಕಿ.ಮೀ. ಸಮೀಪವಿರುವ ಚಾಮುಂಡಿ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಮೇಲೆ ಚಾಮುಂಡೇಶ್ವರಿ ದೇವಾಲಯವಿದೆ. ಶ್ರೀ ಚಾಮುಂಡೇಶ್ವರಿ ದೇವಿಯು ದುರ್ಗೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಶಕ್ತಿ ದೇವತೆಗಳ ಸ್ವರೂಪಿಣಿಯೆಂದು ಪುರಾಣಗಳಿಂದ ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಶ್ರೀ ಚಾಮುಂಡೇಶ್ವರಿಯು ಚಂಡ-ಮುಂಡರೆಂಬ ದಾನವರನ್ನು ಹಾಗೂ ಮಹಿಷಾಸುರರನ್ನು ಸಂಹರಿಸುವ ಸಲುವಾಗಿ ದುರ್ಗಾದೇವಿಯ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ಧರಿಸಿದಳೆಂದು ಪುರಾಣಗಳು ಹೇಳುತ್ತವೆ.
