Swarna Gauri Vrat is an important festival celebrated in Shukla Triteeya of Bhadrapadmaas in southern parts of India. Gauri means the white one. Goddess Parvati who did penance to win the heart of Lord Shiva is called by many names. Gauri is one these names. Swarna Gauri Vrat is celebrated as Hartalika in the northern parts of India. It is a custom to offer worship to the image of Parvati made in clay, silver or gold. An image made of turmeric is also worshipped with Swarna Gauri. Turmeric is called Haridra in Sanskrit. Harit means golden or gold like.

How the Shaktipeeth came into existence?

Sati or Dakshayini humiliated by Daksha Prajapati, jumps into the sacred fire and kills herself. Lord Shiva, hearing this news sends Verabhadra to destroy the Yaag. Carrying the dead body of Sati, Lord Shiva roams aimlessly. Lord Vishnu cuts up Sati’s body using Sudarshan Chakra. Her body cut to pieces fall everywhere.

Wherever the body part fell, the region became Shaktipeeth because of the energy of Sati. A temple was formed in such a place. It is said Sri temple is the place where the anklet fell down.

Temple Architecture:

Temple follows the Nagara style of architecture. Exterior walls of the temple are full of intricate carvings and sculptures of gods and goddesses. The image of presiding deity is of blackstone about 30 inches in height. Goddess Sri Sundari is always covered in a red cloth. Kshetra Palak Bhairav is called Sundaranand here. Sri Sundari represents the mother-nature and hence grants any boon desired to one and all seeking Siddhi (Boon) with purity of heart.

What festivals are celebrated at Sri Parvat Shakti Peeth?

Maha Shivaratri occurring in the Phalgunmaas is celebrated by devotees in a big way. Nine-day festival of Navaratri is celebrated with decorations of different forms of Sri Durgadevi. Karteekmaas and Maaghmaas are not to be missed by devotees of Shiva. A grand fair is conducted here during the festival of Diwali.

What are the nearby temples?

Kheer Bhavani (Ksheer Bhavani) temple situated in Tulmul is a nearby temple visited by devotees. The name Tul Mul is said to have been derived from ‘Atul Amulya’ meaning something whose value cannot be measured.

Lord Shiva was pleased with the devotion of demon king Ravan and gave away the image of Ksheer Bhavani to him. Happy demon king installed the image in Swarnalanka. However the goddess became displeased with the changes that took place in the nature of Ravan. She ordered Hanuman to take the image back to the abode of Lord Shiva. Swarnalanka thus lost the radiance and Lord Rama was soon able to defeat Ravan and kill him.
