Basant Panchami Celebrations in India

In many parts of India, this Vasant Panchami festival is known as Saraswati puja, a day to propitiate Goddess Saraswati. It is believed that, the Goddess of Learning incarnated from Ksheer Sagar (Milky Ocean) on this day. In south India, it is celebrated as Sri Panchami, Sri being one of the names of Goddess Lakshmi.  Apart from Saraswati, Lord Ganesh, Sun God, Lord Vishnu, and Shiva are also worshipped by offering flowers and navaidyam.

Basanth Panchami | Eastern parts of India

In the Eastern parts of India, books and musical instruments are put on a pedestal and worshipped with devotion on this day. Yellow is the colour of spring, the colour of brightness, a symbol of prosperity, and the colour Goddess Saraswati wears on this day.

So, on Basant Panchami, everything adorns a yellow shade right from the dress women wear to the food that is cooked. The mustard crop is also usually harvested around this time of the year, making the yellow more dominant. Community pujas and Vidhyaarambh—the initiation of a child into the world of education—are the highlights of Basant Panchami.

Vasanth Panchami down south

As we move to the south, this day is celebrated as Sri Panchami, Sri being one of the names for Goddess Lakshmi. Apart from Goddesses Lakshmi and Saraswati, Lord Ganesh, the Sun God, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva are also worshipped on this day.

Vasant Panchami is also a very auspicious day for worshipping Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician. It is a popular belief that performing Dhanvantari Havan or Homam on this day leads to good health and longevity.

It is considered highly auspicious to perform Saraswati Sookta Homam on this day, seeking obstacle-free progress in education.

Belief: Basanth Panchami Puja showers knowledge, health and spiritual progress

It is a popular belief that performing Vasant Panchami puja not only blesses the individual with good health and prosperity but also ensures the spiritual well-being of the soul. Prayers and pujas on Basant Panchami are believed to grant success in all endeavors, knowledge and wisdom in worldly matters, and knowledge of self and the divine. Worshipping Goddess Saraswati, especially on the day of Basant Panchami, is said to help students and others pursuing various other fine arts with grasping power, focus, memory, awareness, communication skills, knowledge, and artistic expression.

Kumara Sambhava and Vasant Panchami – Legend

Kumara Sambhava or Kumara Sambhavam is an epic poem by the great poet KalidasaKumara Sambhava literally means “The Birth of Kumara”  who is also known as Kartikeya, Murugan and Subrahmanya.

Though Vasant Panchami is associated with Goddess Saraswati, there is an interesting and popular legend associated with it. On the day of Vasant Panchami, Kama Dev created a fictitious spring on Kailash to lure Lord Shiva, who was on a deep penance, and compel him to abandon his penance and reunite with his consort Parvathi (Sati in an earlier incarnation). Shiva did awaken, but he reduced Kamadev to ashes (from which he was later resurrected). Then Shiva united with Parvati, and Lord Kartikeya was born, who went on to destroy the most formidable demon, Tarakasura.
