Who are affected by Rahu-Ketu Gochara Phala? What Remedies?

In Vedic Astrology, of all the nine planets, Rahu and Ketu have a special significance. Rahu-Ketu Gochaara Parihara Homam performed on the basis of Rahu-Ketu Gochara Phala is one of the Vedic reccommendations to address the problems related to these Grahas.

It is mentioned in Gochaara Phala that Rahu brings ‘Bahubalam’ or physical strength. Planet Ketu brings ‘Kulasya Unnathi’, or rise and upliftment of the whole family. Rahu and Kethu transition from one zodiac sign to another happens once in eighteen months. Both the planets always travel & transit simultaneously.

PurePrayer takes you on a deep-dive into the intricacies of the Vedic Astrology, effects of Rahu-Ketu on individuals and Vedic solutions for these astrological indications.

Rahu and Ketu do not have the ownership of any houses or zodiac signs. They largely reflect the characteristics of ruling planet, whichever the house they are temporarily staying in. It is also mentioned that while giving Phala or results to a native as per horoscope or Gochaara, Rahu follows Shani & Kethu follows Kuja.

Birth of Rahu and Ketu

Rahu and Ketu are considered to be the two halves of the immortal Asura (demon) Svarbhanu, who was beheaded by the Lord Vishnu.

Puranas mention the reason for the birth of Rahu Ketu which is associated with Doorvasa Maharshi. Long ago Lord Indra, the ruler of Swargaloka and Devatas, was riding on his elephant. Sage Doorvasa saw Indra and he offered him a garland of fragrant flowers. Indra accepted the garland with a smile and placed it on the trunk of his elephant. The elephant got irritated by the scent of the garland and threw it on the ground. This act enraged Doorvasa and he cursed Indra and all the Devatas to lose their Divya Shakti (Divine powers) and their immortality. Indra requested the holy sage’s forgiveness.

Danavas or the demons, learning this curse, attacked the Swargaloka (Heavens) and occupied the whole universe. The displaced Devatas led by Indra approached Lord Brahma for help, who in turn guided them to Lord Vishnu.

Amrit Manthan – The Great Churn

Lord Vishnu made a plan and suggested Devas to approach Danavas or Asuras and ask them for their co-operation in churning the Ksheera Sagar (Milky Ocean) to obtain ‘Amrit’, the elixir or nectar of immortality.

Devatas approached Asuras who agreed to this idea of immortality achieved through Amrit Manthan, took up the task. They started churning using Mount Mandhara and the great Serpent Vasuki as a rope. Lord Vishnu incarnated as a tortoise (Koormavataara) to hold up the mountain on his back to prevent the sinking of Mandhara Parvat.

As the churning of the ocean started, several interesting objects emerged. Kamadhenu, the wish-fulfilling cow, celestial horse Ucchaishravas, Airavat, the celestial elephant, the Kausthubha gem, the Kalpa-Vriksha (wish-fulfilling tree), Apsaras, the beautiful celestials maids, Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and finally Dhanvantari.

Dhanvantari, the god of medicine, appeared holding the pot of amrita. The Asuras forcefully snatched it from Dhanvantari, and refused to give it to Devatas. Lord Vishnu then incarnated as Mohini, the enchantress, the most beautiful female form in the universe.

Mohini successfully took control of the vessel with elixir of immortality and she suggested Devatas and Danavas to sit in different rows, so that she distributed Amrit among them. All the Devatas and Daanavas agreed. Mohini started distributing Amrit to the Devatas. One demon named Swarbhanu, disguised himself and was able to sit in the row of Devatas and swallowed the nectar given to him. Soorya and Chandra noticed this beguile and they informed Mohini. Vishnu as Mohini cut off his head with Sudarshan Chakra. However, Swarbhanu having consumed Amrit had become immortal. He could not die, but his head separated from his body. These separated head and body came to be referred as Rahu and Ketu.

Devatas who became immortal due to Amrit with the timely Avatar of Mohini, fought against the demons and successfully restored peace in the universe.

Rahu and Ketu prayed to Lord Vishnu. He placed them in the Celestial group of Grahas, giving them a boon.

Rahu – Ketu Gochaara Phala

It is mentioned in Gochaara Phala that Rahu brings ‘Bahubalam’ or physical strength. Planet Ketu brings ‘Kulasya Unnathi’, or rise and upliftment of the whole family.

A popular saying in Tamil says, “No deity or Graha blesses with abundance like Rahu & No deity or planet spoils like Ketu”, which explains everything. However, when Rahu and Ketu are placed in adverse signs in horoscope or when they enter unfavourable houses in Gochara or transit, people may experience variety of troubles, challenges and difficulties. Hence it is strongly advised to take precautionary measures & safeguard themselves and their family.

Rahu & Kethu transition from one zodiac sign to another happens once in eighteen months. Both the planets always travel & transit simultaneously. Rahu and Ketu do not have the ownership of any houses or zodiac signs. They largely reflect the characteristics of ruling planet, whichever the house they are temporarily staying in.
