Sangam is the confluence of three rivers Kaveri, Lokapavani and Kabini near Srirangapatna. Many devotees visit the Sangam during Dakshinayan, commencing from Shravanmaas for performing ancestral worships, Pind Daan, Tripindi shraddh, Shradh Puja, Varshika Shradh, Pitru paksha shradh.
This region was known as Gautama Kshetra during Vedic age. It is stated in the Brahmanda Purana that, Lord Vishnu settled in this region as Lord Sri Ranganathaswamy to answer the prayers of Kaveri and Sage Gautama.

The confluence of three rivers at Srirangapatna, namely The holy Kaveri, the Kabini and Hemavathi is known as Triveni Sangam. Thousands of people come to Paschima Vahini all through the year for ‘Asti Visarjan’ or immersion of ashes of the dead. This is believed to give ‘Moksha’ or eternal life to the dead person. This is also the place where Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes was also immersed.
The river Kaveri is also known as Paschimavahini and is believed to grant Moksha for the departed, when ‘Asthi Visarjan’ is performed here. Devotees take up many kinds of religious activities like Homas, Shantis and funeral rites, shradh, Tripindi shradh, at Srirangapatna.
Srirangapattana is about 130Kms from Bangalore and it takes around 2 1/2 hours to reach. If traveling from Bangalore one must start early in the morning or as early as possible as Shradh rituals start early last longer till which one is expected to be in fasting.
