Thiruvannamalai is an ancient Kshetra in Tamil Nadu. Lord Shiva has adorned this region assuming the form of Lord Arunachaleswarar or simply Arunachaleshwar. The Shiva Lingam of Arunachaleshwara is known as Agni Lingam, representing the Fire Element among the Pancha Bhuta Sthalams.
Lord Shiva’s manifestation as the element of fire. Lord Shiva assumed the form of an infinitely tall fire pillar. Brahma and Vishnu tried to trace the base and upper limit of this pillar, but in vain. Lord Shiva then scaled down and assumed this form of the finite Arunachala hill.
