Thiruvannamalai is an ancient Kshetra in Tamil Nadu. Lord Shiva has adorned this region assuming the form of Lord Arunachaleswarar or simply Arunachaleshwar. The Shiva Lingam of Arunachaleshwara is known as Agni Lingam, representing the Fire Element among the Pancha Bhuta Sthalams.

Lord Shiva’s manifestation as the element of fire. Lord Shiva assumed the form of an infinitely tall fire pillar. Brahma and Vishnu tried to trace the base and upper limit of this pillar, but in vain. Lord Shiva then scaled down and assumed this form of the finite Arunachala hill.

The town attracts devotees from all over India and beyond, particularly during special occasions such as the Karthigai Deepam festival, which is celebrated with great fervour. The highlight of this festival is the lighting of a huge lamp atop the Annamalai hill, which is visible for miles around. Devotees of Arunachala, perform a Parikrama or the walk around the hill of Arunachala. This is a 14 kilometre Pradakshina (circumambulation) of the Arunachala Hill on Full Moon day. This Parikrama or Giri Pradakshina is known as Girivalam in Tamil.
