Ganga Arati Importance

Ganga Arati is performed along with Ganga Puja offering obeisance the sacred Goddess Ganga. She is capable of removing our sins, just by chanting her names. A holy dip in Ganga is said to remove the accumulated sins of many generations. Participating in Ganga Arati can be a great spiritual uplift and having wishes fulfilled.

The following Shloka beginning as “Namami Gange” explains the importance of Goddess Ganga:

।। नमामि गंगे ! तव पाद पंकजम सुरसुरैर्वन्दित दिव्य रूपं ।

। भुक्तिं च मुक्तिं च ददासि नित्यं भावनु सारेण सदा नराणाम् ॥

Goddess Ganga Importance

Goddess Ganga or Ganges is an important deity mentioned in Vedas and Ashtadasha Puranas (Eighteen Puranas). Ganga is said to have descended from the Lotus feet of Lord Vishnu. Ganges descended from Svargalok (Heavens) on orders from Lord Vishnu to the earth, when Sage Bhagirath performed penance seeking Moksha (salvation) of his forefathers. Bhagirath prayed to Lord Shiva seeking his help in bringing Ganges to the earth.

Ganga or the River Ganges is highly regarded by the Hindu as a holy river that originates at Gangotri in Haridwar. People from all over India and many other countries come to the river to take a holy dip. This is said to wash away their sins. The ritual of bathing on the banks of the holy river Ganga is believed to cleanse away sins and thereby help to attain moksha or salvation.

Ganga Puja Importance

According to Sanatan Dharma, it is a common practice to offer Ganga Puja every day. Any Hindu devotee typically would perform Ganga Puja on all important occasions and as a part of Nityarchana (Daily Pujas). Many Shlokas on Ganga Maata are chanted everyday as a part of bathing and spiritual cleansing.

Haridwar Kshetra

Haridwar is hailed as one of the best showcases of Indian civilization and culture. It is also regarded as one of the Sacred Seven Places or Sapta Puri in the Hindu Sanatan Dharma. The name literally translates to “Gateway to Gods,” with Hari-Hara which means Almighty and “Dwar” meaning door. Hardwar is regarded as the entry point to the Hindu religious pilgrimage or Char Dhaam yatra that covers the four places of Yamnunotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Gangotri. King Bhagirath is said to have accomplished the salvation of his ancestors by bringing the river Ganga from heaven at Hardwar. Haridwar is one of the destinations where the Kumbh Mela is held after every twelve years.
