Importance of Skanda Shashthi & Soorasamharam on 18^th November 2023

Skanda Shashthi on 18^th November, 2023 is a famous festive occasion in Tamil Nadu dedicated to Lord Murugan or Skanda. The festival begins on 14^th November, 2023 and will be concluding on 19^th November, 2023. During which the devotees observe fast and worship Lord Murugan with devotion.

The last day of the festival is known as the Soorasamharam, as it was on this day that the Lord Murugan vanquished the demon ‘Surapadma’ or ‘Soorapadman’.

Shashti Thithi is dedicated to Lord Subrahmanya or Skanda. Shashthi occurring on Tuesdays are considered highly auspicious. Nakshatram like Vishakha or Krittika can yield very good results when Abhishekam is performed. Skanda Maha Purana, which is one of the Ashtadasha Puranas, is a very good source of information on Lord Subrahmanya.

Soorapadman, Simhamukha and Tarakasura were the sons of the Sage Kashyapa and Surasa. Soorapadman did a very long penance to Lord Shiva. He sought a boon that no one except Shiva’s offspring, born without shiva’s union with Parvati, in any nature, could either kill or defeat him. Kartikeya was born from the third eye on the forehead and became the commander of the army that fought with the demons that led to the removal of demons.
