Lord Virabhadra is said to have manifest from Lord Shiva according to Shiva Purana. Lord Shiva created him from a strand of his hair in anger to destroy Daksha Yaag when, Sati sacrificed herself in the Homa Kunda. Virabhadra executed Daksha Prajapati and destroyed the Yajjna. Later, Gods brought Daksha to life attaching a Goat’s head. There are many temples dedicated to Virabhadra Swamy across India.
Virabhadra Jayanti is celebrated on the first Tuesday of Bhadrapadmaas every year. There are references made to the deity Virabhadra by the renowned traveller Marc Polo.
