Karanavar Kurupu, was a member of Pazhangadu Tharavadu in Ambalappuzha, in the 12th Century. From Kalladikkode hill, he was invoking Goddess Bhadrakali in plantain leaves and brought in to this famed Pazhangadu Kalari, is the legend. It is also believed that the Moorthi of Chithala Neeliyar thottam at a place Morazha in Malabar is an embodiment ‘evoked’ from Kalladikkode. When the mountain at Kalladikkode was exploded years back, 36 Mala Deva-Devathas were coming out and those had been travelling from Kalladikkodan High hill upto distant sea-shores. Still in Malabar it is ceremonially practiced these 36 deva-devathas are presented in ‘Kolam’ forms by the people there. Karanavar Kurup was deep in his devotion towards Neelibhagawathi, could acquire many Abheeshta Siddhis and was renowned to be a man of his invincibility. His last stage was he practiced deep penance for his “Jeeva Samadhi”. The Yanthras inserted in his body was obstructing the trance-stage, the Jeeva found it difficult to get separated. At a final stage the Paravur Thampuran was coming forth, he was removing the Yanthras located inside the thighs and forehead of Kurup who was to the Thampuran, a minister too. Kurup was getting the ultimate liberation. പന്ത്രണ്ടാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ, അമ്പലപ്പുഴ പഴങ്ങാട് തറവാട്ടിലെ അംഗമായ ഒരു യോഗിവര്യന്‍ (കാരണവര്‍ കുറുപ്പ്) കല്ലടിക്കോടുമാലയിൽ നിന്നും ഭദ്രകാളിയെ വാഴയിലയിൽ ആവാഹിച്ചു കൊണ്ടുവന്നു ഈ കളരിയിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചു എന്നാണു ഐതീഹ്യം. മലബാറിൽ മൊറാഴയിൽ നീലിയാർ തോട്ടത്തിലെ മൂർത്തിയെയും കല്ലടിക്കോടിൽ നിന്നും ആവാഹിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് പോയതാണെന്നൊരു വിശ്വാസവുമുണ്ട്. കല്ലടിക്കോടൻ മലയിലെ മുപ്പത്തിയാറു മലദൈവങ്ങളും ആ മലപൊട്ടിയപ്പോൾ പുറത്തുവന്നുവെന്നും അവർ കല്ലടിക്കോടൻ മല മുതൽ കടൽ വരെ സഞ്ചരിച്ചുവെന്നും കഥയുണ്ട്. മലബാറിൽ ഈ മുപ്പത്തിയാറു ദൈവങ്ങളുടെയും കോലങ്ങൾ കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന പതിവ് ഇന്നുമുണ്ട്. നീലിഭഗവതിയിൽ നിന്നും അഭീഷ്ടസിദ്ധികൾ നേടിയ കുറുപ്പ് അജയ്യനാകുകയും ഒടുവിൽ ജീവൽ സമാധി കൈവരിക്കുന്നതിന് വേണ്ടി തപസ്സു ചെയുകയും ചെയ്തു. പക്ഷെ സ്വന്തം ശരീരത്തിലെ യന്ത്രത്തകിടുകള്‍ മൂലം ജീവൻ പോകാതിരുന്നുവത്രെ. ഒടുവിൽ തന്‍റെ മന്ത്രി കൂടിയായിരുന്ന കുറിപ്പിന്‍റെ തുടയിലും നെറ്റിയിലും ഉള്ള തകിടുകൾ പറവൂർ തമ്പുരാന് കീറിമുറിച്ചു മാറ്റേണ്ടി വന്നുവെന്നും അതിനു ശേഷമാണ് കുറുപ്പിന്റെ ജീവൻ പോയതെന്നും കേൾവിയുണ്ട്.
