About 1200 years back it is believed that in the Perumbalam Island the Brahmins who came and stayed there constructed many temples and also took control of the existing temples. The idol Prathishta of Dharma Sastha is Swayamboo (self originated) and is spherical. Initially all the properties which belonged to the Edavanakkad Mana was later donated to the Ariveliyil Nair family with the Brahmin family vacating the place. In the early times the temple was positioned in the place which is now flooded as backwaters. In the year 1341 due to a devastating flood the Eastern boundary broke, due to which the Perumbalam canal (used for bathing bulls) which became a part of the Vembanad backwater and hence the Dharma Sastha's temple was struck down to ruins. Later temple was reinstalled on the Southern side of the existing temple. Even this became a prey to natural calamity due to fire and the idol worshipped as main deity was split into two halves. This is the "Vedakkallil" which is worshipped by the devotees who come to Sabarimala and pray offering coconut. Shifting towards the North is where the existing temple which is reconstructed and reinstalled. A lady who belonged to the Ariveliyil family was disputed from the community and family, was found in salutation in the temple premise. An "Arayan" who belonged to Dheevara community married her and the son born to them was named Unni Unniran. He left the house after a controversy with his father and reached Thrikunnapuzha. There were many families who belonged to the Dheevara family and he spent his days educating the kids and also mastering them in Kalari and later he became a greatdevotee to Thrikunnapuzha Sastha. After many years he returned to Perumbalam. It is believed that the Dharma Sastha of Thrikunnapuzha accompanied him to Perumbalam. Since then Thrikunnapuzha Sastha is believed to have been in this temple. Before the festival commences a rally is taken to Thrikunnapuzha temple and for offering puja and only after bringing the "Rice and Flowers" from there to Perumbalam the flag for festival is hoisted. Until 1986 during the Mandala period which falls on first of Vrichika month till 25 th there were daily Pujas organised and on 26th holy knot is tied to the hands of the head of the family and till the end of Dhanu month, the 'Kalamezhuthum paattum' (mongering song) were done. On Dhanu end is rejoiced with a Sharakol procession. There were Pujas done on the Malayalam month transit days. From the period 1986 to 2005 the temple festival is always celebrated in the month of Vrichikam with hoisting of temple flag on 26th and ends with Aaraattu on month end of Dhanu. After re deployment of Brahmasree Kandar Rajeevar on 7th of May in the year 2006 after which the festival ends with Aaraattu on Vrichikam month Uthram star. The temple is administered under the guidance of Njayarukad family and Perumbalam trust AKDS BR.38. 1200 വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മുമ്പ് പെരുമ്പളം ദ്വീപില്‍ കുടിയേറി പാര്‍ത്തിരുന്ന ബ്രാഹ്മണന്മാര്‍ നിരവധി ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങള്‍ നിര്‍മ്മിക്കുകയും, നിലനിന്നിരുന്ന ആരാധനാലയങ്ങളുടെ അധിപ രാവുകയും ആരാധന നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു പോന്നിരുന്നു. ശ്രീ ധര്‍മ്മ ശാസ്താവിന്‍റെ ഗോളാകൃതിയില്‍ ഉള്ള ശിലാപ്രതിഷ്ഠ സ്വയംഭൂ ആണെന്ന് സങ്കല്‍പ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. എടവനക്കാട് മനയുടെ ഉടമസ്ഥതയിലായിരുന്നു ക്ഷേത്രവും സ്വത്ത്വകകളും. തലമുറകള്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞുപോകവെ അരിവേലില്‍ എന്ന നായര്‍ കുടുംബത്തിന് ക്ഷേത്രവും സ്വത്ത് വകകളും ദാനം നല്‍കി ബ്രാഹ്മണ കുടുംബം നാട് വിട്ടു. ആദ്യകാലത്ത് ക്ഷേത്രം നിലനിന്നിരുന്നത്, ഇന്ന് കായല്‍ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് ആയി രുന്നു. 1341 ലെ അതിഭയങ്കരമായ വെള്ളപ്പൊക്കത്തില്‍ വെറും തോട് [ കാളകളെ കുളി പ്പിച്ചിരുന്ന ] മാത്രം ആയിരുന്ന പെരുമ്പളത്തിന്‍റെ കിഴക്ക് ഭാഗം മലവെള്ളത്തിന്‍റെ കുത്തോ ഴുക്കില്‍ മുറിഞ്ഞു വേമ്പനാട്ട് കായലിന്‍റെ ഭാഗമായിതിര്‍ന്നു. ശാസ്താവിന്‍റെ ക്ഷേത്രം കുത്തൊഴുക്കില്‍ തകര്‍ന്ന് പോയി. പില്‍ക്കാലത്ത് നിലവിലുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് തെക്ക് ഭാഗത്തായി ക്ഷേത്രം പുനര്‍ നിര്‍മ്മിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. എന്നാല്‍ ഇതും അഗ്നി ബാധയാല്‍ നശിച്ചു പോയി. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മൂല വിഗ്രഹം തീ പിടിച്ച് രണ്ടായി പിളര്‍ന്നു. ഇന്ന് ശബരിമല ദര്‍ശനത്തിനു പുറപ്പെടുന്ന അയ്യപ്പഭക്തന്മാര്‍ തിരിവെച്ച് നാളികേരം ഉടച്ച് നമസ്കരിക്കുന്ന ത് ഈ ‘വേദക്കല്ലില്‍’ ആണ്. അവിടെ നിന്ന് വടക്ക് മാറി ഇന്ന് കാണുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രം ഇരി ക്കുന്ന ഇടത്ത് ക്ഷേത്രം പണിത് ആരാധന നടത്തി പോന്നിരുന്നു. അറിവേലില്‍ തറവാട്ടിലെ ഒരു സ്ത്രീ ഏതോ കാരണത്താല്‍ ഭ്രഷ്ട് കല്‍പ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ട് കുടുംബ ത്തില്‍ നിന്നും സമുതായത്തില്‍ നിന്നും പുറംതള്ളപ്പെട്ട് ക്ഷേത്രനടയില്‍ വീണു കിടന്നു പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥിക്കുന്ന അവളെ “അരയന്‍” എന്ന് സ്ഥാനപ്പേര് ഉള്ള ധീവര സമുദായത്തില്‍പെട്ട ഞായറുകാട്ട് കുടുംബത്തിലെ ഒരു യുവാവ് ഭാര്യയായി സ്വീകരിച്ചു. അവരില്‍ ഉണ്ടായ പുത്രന്‍ ആണ് ഉണ്ണി ഉണ്ണിരാന്‍. അദ്ദേഹo അച്ഛനുമായി പിണങ്ങി വീട് വിട്ട് ഇറങ്ങി തൃ ക്കുന്നപ്പുഴയില്‍ എത്തി. അവിടെ ധാരാളം ധീവര ഭവനങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അവിടത്തെ ക്കുട്ടികളെ അക്ഷര അഭ്യാസവും കളരി അഭ്യാസവും പഠിപ്പിച്ചു. അദ്ദേഹം തൃക്കുന്നപ്പുഴ ശാസ്താവിന്‍റെ ഭക്തനായി തീരുകയും, വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കുശേഷം അദ്ദേഹം തിരികെ പെരുമ്പള ത്ത് എത്തി. തൃക്കുന്നപ്പുഴ ശാസ്താവും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ കൂടെ പോന്നു എന്നാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം. അന്ന് മുതല്‍ തൃക്കുന്നപ്പുഴ ശാസ്താവും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തില്‍ കുടികൊള്ളുന്നു എന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. ഇന്നും ഉത്സവത്തിന് മുന്‍പ് ഓടി വള്ളത്തില്‍ തൃക്കുന്നപ്പുഴ ശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രത്തില്‍ പോയി വഴിപാടുനടത്തി ‘അരിയും പൂവും’ കൊണ്ടുവന്നതിനു ശേഷം ആണ് ഉത്സവത്തിന് കൊടി കയറുന്നത്. 1986 വരെ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തില്‍ മണ്ഡലകാലം ആയ വൃശ്ചികം മാസം 1 തിയതി മുതല്‍ 25 തിയതി വരെ നിത്യപൂജയും, 26 തിയതി കുടുംബ കാരണവരുടെ കയ്യില്‍ കാപ്പ് കെട്ടി ധനു സംക്രമം വരെ ‘കളമെഴുത്തും പാട്ടും’ നടത്തി വന്നിരുന്നു. ധനു സംക്രമത്തിന് ‘ശര ക്കോല്‍’ എഴുന്നള്ളിച്ച് ഉത്സവം ആഘോഷിക്കുകയും, മറ്റ് മലയാളമാസ സംക്രമ ദിനത്തില്‍ മാത്രമേ പൂജ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളൂ. 1986 മുതല്‍ 2005 വരെ വൃശ്ചിക മാസം 26ന് കൊടികയറി ധനു സംക്രമത്തിന് ആറാട്ടോ ടുകൂടി ഉത്സവം സമാപിച്ചിരുന്നു. 2006 മെയ്‌ മാസം 7 ന് ബ്രഹ്മശ്രീ കണ്ഠര് രാജീവര് അവറുകള്‍ പുന:പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തിയതിനു ശേഷം, വൃശ്ചിക മാസത്തിലെ ഉത്രം നക്ഷത്ര ത്തില്‍ ആറാട്ടോടുകൂടി ഉത്സവം സമാപിക്കുന്നു. ഞായറുകാട്ട് കുടുംബക്കാരുടെയും പെരുമ്പളം AKDS Br. 38 ന്‍റെയും നേതൃത്ത്വത്തില്‍ ഉള്ള സമിതി ആണ് ക്ഷേത്ര ഭരണം നടത്തുന്നത്.
