ಮೊದಲನೇ ಕೆಂಪೇಗೌಡರು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದಾಗ ಅನೇಕ ಗುಡಿ, ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿದರೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಅವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಬಸವನಗುಡಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಶ್ರೀ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಗಣಪತಿಯ ಗುಡಿಗಳೂ ಸೇರಿವೆಯೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಕೆಂಪೇಗೌಡರು ಬಸವನಗುಡಿಯ ಅರಣ್ಯಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಗುಡ್ಡಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು ಸಂದರ್ಶಿಸಿದಾಗ, ದೊಡ್ಡ ಶಿಲೆಯೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ಗಣೇಶನ ಆಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ, ಶಿಲ್ಪಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕರೆಸಿ ಈಗಿರುವಂತೆ ಗಣೇಶನ ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ಆಕಾರವನ್ನು ಹೊರಹೊಮ್ಮಿಸಿದರು. ಒಂದು ದಂತಕಥೆಯಂತೆ, ವೃಷಭವೊಂದು ಸುತ್ತಲಿನ ಹೊಲಗದ್ದೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಬೆಳೆಗಳನ್ನು ತಿಂದು ಹಾಳುಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದುದನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಿ, ಗ್ರಾಮಸ್ಥರು ಆ ವೃಷಭವನ್ನು ಓಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋದಾಗ ಅದು ಶಿಲಾಪ್ರತಿಮೆಯಾಗಿ ಪರಿವರ್ತನೆಗೊಂಡಿತೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದ ಕೆಂಪೇಗೌಡರು, ಅಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಬಸವನಿಗೆ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದರೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳ "ಬಸವನಗುಡಿ" ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿತು. Kempegowda I, who founded Bangalore in 1537, renovated some temples during his regime. The temples of Dodda Basava and Dodda Ganesha on Bull Temple Road in Basavanagudi, Bengalur, were among the temples which were constructed by Kempegowda I. Once, Kempegowda was moving about in the southern parts of Bengaluru, when he saw a large number of giant rocks and boulders lying in a hillock, which is now called Bugle Rock. He also saw a faint form of Ganesha appearing on one of the giant rocks. He immediately summoned a few sculptors and made them carve out a clear image of monolithic idol of Lord Ganesha. Later, a thatched roof was created for the idol. Meanwhile, Kempegowda I was told that a bullock was consuming and destroying the yields in the farmlands around the hillock. When some farmers chased the bullock, it ran away, entered a temple and assumed the form of an idol of stone. This story prompted Kempegowda I to build a temple dedicated to “Basava” or Nandi, the vehicle of Lord Shiva. Basavanagudi, the name of this area, is derived from the big bull temple as Basava in Kannada means bullock and Gudi means a temple.

ದಿನಾಂಕ ಏಪ್ರಿಲ್ 4, 1973ರಂದು ಶ್ರೀ ದೊಡ್ಡಗಣಪತಿ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ನವೀಕರಣ ಹಾಗೂ ರಾಜಗೋಪುರ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಶೃಂಗೇರಿ ಶ್ರೀಮದಭಿನವ ವಿದ್ಯಾತೀರ್ಥಮಹಾಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಶಿಲಾನ್ಯಾಸ ಕಾರ್ಯವನ್ನು ನೆರವೇರಿಸಿದರು. ಮುಂದೆ ದಿನಾಂಕ ಜನವರಿ 29, 1988ರಂದು ಉಡುಪಿಯ ಶ್ರೀ ಅಧೋಕ್ಷಜ ಪೇಜಾವರ ಮಠದ ಶ್ರೀ ವಿಶ್ವೇಶತೀರ್ಥರು, ಶಿವಗಂಗಾ ಶೃಂಗೇರಿಮಠದ ಶ್ರೀ ಅಭಿನವ ಸಚ್ಚಿದಾನಂದ ಭಾರತಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಕೈಲಾಸ ಆಶ್ರಮದ ಶ್ರೀ ತಿರುಚಿ ಮಹಾಸ್ವಾಮಿಯವರ ದಿವ್ಯ ಸಾನ್ನಿಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂದಿನ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದ ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಮಕೃಷ್ಣ ಹೆಗ್ಡೆಯವರು ನವೀಕರಣಗೊಂಡ ಶ್ರೀ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಗಣಪತಿ ದೇವಾಲಯ ಮತ್ತು ನೂತನವಾಗಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲಾಗಿದ್ದ ರಾಜಗೋಪುರಗಳ ಉದ್ಘಾಟನೆಯನ್ನು ನೆರವೇರಿಸಿದರು. On April 4, 1973, the Seer of Shringeri Sri Srimadabhinava Vidyatirtha Mahaswamiji laid the foundation for the renovation of the temple, with the Rajagopura (main tower), which was inaugurated on January 29, 1988 by the then Chief Minister of Karnataka Sri Ramakrishna Hegde in the gracious presence of Sri Visvesha Tirtharu of Udupi Sri Adhokshaja Pejavar Mutt, Sri Abhinava Sachchidananda Bharati of Shivaganga Shringeri Mutt and Sri Tiruchi Mahaswami of Kailas Ashram.

ಶ್ರೀ ದೊಡ್ದಗಣೇಶನ ವಿಗ್ರಹವು ಏಕಶಿಲಾ ಪ್ರತಿಮೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಸುಮಾರು 18 ಅಡಿ ಎತ್ತರ ಹಾಗೂ 16 ಅಡಿ ಅಗಲವಿದೆ. ಶ್ರೀ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಗಣೇಶನ ವಿಗ್ರಹಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾಡಲಾಗುವ “ಬೆಣ್ಣೆ ಅಲಂಕಾರ”ವು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿದೆ. ಒಂದು ಹಳೆಯ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯದಂತೆ, ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ನೇಯ್ಗೆ ಜನಾಂಗದವರು ಹೊಸ ಮಗ್ಗಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾರ್ಯಾರಂಭ ಮಾಡುವ ಮುನ್ನ ತೆಂಗಿನಕಾಯಿಯನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿ, ಶ್ರೀ ದೊಡ್ಡಗಣೇಶನ ಗುಡಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ನೂರೊಂದು ತೆಂಗಿನಕಾಯಿಗಳನ್ನು ಅರ್ಪಿಸಿ, ನಂತರದಲ್ಲಿ ನೇಯ್ಗೆಯನ್ನಾರಂಭಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಈ ಗಣೇಶನ ವಿಗ್ರಹವು ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಿದೆಯೆಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯೂ ಇದೆ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ, ವಿಗ್ರಹ ಹಾಗೂ ಅದರ ಹಿಂದಿರುವ ಗೋಡೆಗೂ ನಡುವೆ ಸುಮಾರು ಒಂದು ಅಡಿಗೂ ಮೀರಿ ಇದ್ದ ಅಂತರವು ಈಗ ಕೆಲವು ಅಂಗುಲಗಳಷ್ಟಾಗಿದೆಯೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಗುಡಿಗಳಿವೆ. ಅವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇಡರ ಕಣ್ಣಪ್ಪ, ಜ್ಞಾನಪ್ರಸೂನಾಂಬಾ, ಬಾಲಾಂಜನೇಯ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳು ಪ್ರಮುಖವಾಗಿವೆ. The monolithic gigantic Ganapati idol is about 18 ft. high and 16 ft. broad. The “Benne Alankara”, warranting usage of over a 100 kg butter to cover the entire idol, is a very popular Seva in this temple. The weavers’ community have been offering hundreds of coconuts to the presiding deity of Dodda Ganapati before commencing their work on a new weaver. According to a common belief, the idol has been growing in size by every year on the right side. Therefore the gap between the hind wall and the idol, which was about a foot a few decades ago, is said to have shrunk to a few inches now. Sri Dodda Ganesha temple complex comprises of a few other temples dedicated to Bedara Kannappa, Jnana Prasoonambika and Balanjaneyaswamy. The Basavanagudi temple is on a hillock and there are steps from the entrance to reach the main temple.
