ಉಪ್ಪುಂದ ಶ್ರೀದುರ್ಗಾಪರಮೇಶ್ವರಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು ಒಂದು ಪುರಾತನ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಕ್ರಿ.ಶ. 8ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಚಾಲುಕ್ಯ ಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣವಾಗಿದೆಯಂಬ ಇತಿಹಾಸವಿದೆ. ಸ್ಕಂದ ಪುರಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯ ದೇವರು ಸನತ್ ಕುಮಾರರಿಗೆ ಸಹ್ಯಾದ್ರಿ ಖಂಡದ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಭಾಗದಿಂದ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಸಮುದ್ರ ತೀರದವರೆಗಿನ ಪುಣ್ಯಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳ ಕುರಿತು ಮಾಹಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಭೋದಿಸಿರುವರು. ಇದೇ ಸ್ಕಂದ ಪುರಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತಂಗ ಮುನಿಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠರು ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಆಗಮಿಸಿದ್ದು ಸುಮನಾ ನದಿ ದಂಡೆಯ ದುರ್ಗಾ ದೇವಿಯನ್ನು ಆರಾಧಿಸಿದ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಿದೆ. ರಾಮಾಯಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೈಂಧವರಾಜನು ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು ಆಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದುದ್ದಾಗಿಯೂ ಆಗ ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಲವಣಪುರಿ, ಸೈಂಧವ ಪುರಿ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿದ್ದಿತ್ತು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಗಸ್ತ್ಯ ಮುನಿಗಳು ವಿಂಧ್ಯ ಪರ್ವತವನ್ನು ದಾಟಿ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭೂಭಾಗಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದವರು ಸಿಂಹಳ, ಕಾಂಬೋಡಿಯಾಗಳನ್ನು ಸುತ್ತಿ ಪುನಃ ಈಶ್ವರ ಪಾರ್ವತಿಯರ ವಿವಾಹ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಜರಿರಲು ಉತ್ತರದ ತ್ರಿಯುಗೀ ನಾರಾಯಣವನ್ನು ತಲುಪಲು ಸದಾ ಶಾಂತಿ, ಸುಭಿಕ್ಷೆಯಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಕರಾವಳಿ, ಪರಶುರಾಮ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿದ್ದರು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ರಾಮಾಯಣ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾವಣನು ಕೈಲಾಸದಿಂದ ಆತ್ಮಲಿಂಗ ಪಡೆದು ಲಂಕೆಗೆ ಹೋಗುವಾಗ ಇದೇ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಕರಾವಳಿಯನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿದ್ದ ಎನ್ನುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಗೋಕರ್ಣ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಮಹಾತ್ಮ್ಯೆಯು ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ ಆಗಿದೆ. Uppunda Shree Durgaparameshwari temple is an ancient temple and is said to have been built during the 8th century in Chalukyan style of architecture. There is enough information related to the holy shrines in the region extending from the west of Sahyadri hills till the western sea coast as per the preachings of Lord Subrahmanya to Sanath Kumara in Skanda Purana. It is said in the Skanda Purana that great saint Matanga had visited this place on the bank of River Sumana and had worshiped goddess Durga here. It is also believed that, great saint Agasthya who had crossed the Vindya mountains to reach the southern parts of the Indian sub-continent to visit places such as Cambodi and Simhala had traversed the Parashu Rama Kshetra on his way back to attend the wedding of lord Shiva and Parvati. During Ramayana, it is said that this place was ruled by King Saindhavaraja and was known as Lavana Puri or Saindhava Puri. It is also believed that, during Ramayana, Ravana had traveled via the coastal belt from Kailasa while carrying the Atmalinga with him as mentioned in "Sri Gokarna Kshethra Mahatme".
