Shivaganga hill shrine has got its own greatness and importance because this was Vrishabhadri hill during kritha yuga, eka shringhadri hill during tritha yuga, Mandakini during dwapara yuga and karodari or shivaganga hill during kali yuga. While viewing this hill from the north it appears in the shape of a serpent, from the south it resembles the idol of Lord Ganesha, from the east it looks like a bull or ox and from the west it seems like Shiva Linga. Another greatness and peculiarity of this hill is that all the stones and rocks resemble either like Shiva Linga or bull or ox and attract each and everybody. Due to these distinctive features, it is believed by the people that the stones, plants and water of this hilly place are gods, holy leaves and holy water respectively. During Dwapara Yuga King Janamiga had undertaken Sarpa Yoga and due to the curse of it he had become a leper. He started travelling from one place to another and finally reached this holy shrine and offered a Kalasha plate to the presiding deity. During the regimes of Vishnu vardhana and Kempegowda the renovation works of this holy shrine was carried out. During Kempegowda regime tower of the temple and houses on both sides of the main roads were constructed. In the surroundings of this temple there are hermitages of sages, dwelling places of poets, holy wells coupled with well-constructed forts. With the presence of all these the holy shrine shines. It is a special belief here that the ghee offered to the Shivalinga converts the ghee back to butter. ಶಿವಗಂಗೆ ಬೆಟ್ಟವು ಅದರದೇ ಮಹತ್ವ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ದಿಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಲು ಕಾರಣ ಕೃತಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ವೃಷಾಬಾದ್ರಿ ಬೆಟ್ಟ, ತ್ರೇತಾಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಶೃಗಂದಿ ಬೆಟ್ಟ ದ್ವಾಪರ ಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಂದಾಕಿನಿ ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಹಾಗೂ ಕಲಿಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವಗಂಗೆ ಅಥವಾ ವಂಕರೋದರಿ ಬೆಟ್ಟವಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಬೆಟ್ಟವನ್ನು ಉತ್ತರ ದಿಕ್ಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಸರ್ಪದಂತೆ, ದಕ್ಷಿಣದಿಂದ ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗದಂತೆ ಅಥವಾ ಎತ್ತಿನ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಭಕ್ತಾದಿಗಳನ್ನು ಆಕರ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರಿಂದ ಭಕ್ತಾದಿಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವ ಗಿಡ ಮರ ಕಲ್ಲು ಮತ್ತು ನೀರು ಎಲ್ಲದರಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವರಿದ್ದಾನೆ ಎಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆ. ದ್ವಾಪರ ಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜ ಜನಮಿಗನು ಸರ್ಪಯಾಗ ಹಾಗೂ ಇದರ ದೋಷದಿಂದ ಕುಷ್ಠರೋಗಕ್ಕೆ ತುತ್ತಾದ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಈ ರಾಜನು ಒಂದು ಊರಿನಿಂದ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಊರಿಗೆ ಹೀಗೆ ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಬೆಳೆಸಿದನು. ನಂತರ ಈ ಪುಣ್ಯಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದನು. ಇವನು ಕಳಸ ತಟ್ಟೆಯನ್ನು ಭಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಅರ್ಪಿಸಿದನು. ಹಿಂದೆ, ರಾಜ ವಿಷ್ಣುವರ್ಧನ ಹಾಗೂ ಕೆಂಪೇಗೌಡರ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಪುಣ್ಯಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದ ಜೀರ್ಣೋದ್ದಾರವಾಗಿದೆ. ಕೆಂಪೇಗೌಡರ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವರ ಗೋಪುರ ಹಾಗೂ ಮುಖ್ಯರಸ್ತೆ ಎರಡು ಬದಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಮನೆಗಳು ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿದರು. ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಋಷಿಗಳ ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕ ಗುರುತುಗಳು ಮಹಾಕವಿಗಳ ತಂಗುದಾಣಗಳು, ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಿಗಳು ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಕೋಟೆಗಳು ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಮೆರಗು ತಂದಿವೆ. ಗಂಗಾಧರೇಶ್ವರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಯವರ ಲಿಂಗದ ಮೇಲೆ ಬೆಣ್ಣೆ ಕಾಸಿದ ತುಪ್ಪವನ್ನು ಲೇಪನ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ. ಪುನ: ಬೆಣ್ಣೆಯಾಗಿ ಪರಿವರ್ತನೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆಂಬುದು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ವಿಶೇಷ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಾಗಿದೆ.
