The history of this temple dates back to the 9th century. It is believed that the temple was cut out of a rock. It was used by the great sage Gowthama to perform penance. Later in the 16th century Kempegowda I who is the founder of Bangalore, extended the temple. According to local legend, Kempegowda was imprisoned by Rama Raya. He suffered imprisonment for 5 years. When he was released, he constructed the temple to show his gratitude. Artistic depiction of the temple is found in the painting of the British Artist James Hunter in 1792. ಶ್ರೀ ಗವಿ ಗಂಗಾಧರೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು 9ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದು, 16ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಸ್ಥಾಪಕರಾದ ಕೆಂಪೇಗೌಡರಿಂದ ಜೀರ್ಣೋದ್ಧಾರಗೊಂಡಿದೆ. ರಾಮ ರಾಯನ ಬಂಧನದಿಂದ 5 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ನಂತರ ಬಂಧಮುಕ್ತರಾದ ಕೆಂಪೇಗೌಡರು, ತಮ್ಮ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆಯ ಸ್ಮರಣಾರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಜೀರ್ಣೋದ್ದಾರವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿಸಿದರು. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಸಹಜ ಗುಹಾಂತರ ದೇವಾಲಯವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಹಲವು ಏಕಶಿಲಾ ಕೆತ್ತನೆಗಳ ವಾಸ್ತುಶಿಲ್ಪವು ಕೌತುಕವನ್ನು ಮೂಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಸೂರ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಚಂದ್ರರ ಬೃಹತ್ ಚಕ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಬೆಂಬಲಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಎರಡು ಬೆಣಚು ಕಲ್ಲಿನ ಕಂಭಗಳು ಶ್ರೀ ಗವಿ ಗಂಗಾಧರೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಆಕರ್ಷಣೆಗಳಾಗಿವೆ. ಬೇರೆರಡು ಕಂಬಗಳ ಮೇಲ್ಬಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವು ನಂದಿಗಳನ್ನು ಇಡಲಾಗಿದೆ.

Every year on the 14th of Jan a rare and significant phenomenon takes place inside the inner sanctum of the temple. The rays of the setting sun on the western horizon shoot a beam of light that passes from an arch on the western wall of the temple before moving towards the inner sanctum. It first lights the back of the Nandi statue and passes over its horns. Then its reaches the feet of the Shivalingam and finally, the beam of light illuminates the body of the Shivalingam. This is a wonderful sight as the event is marked by the continuous ringing of the bells and chanting of mantras. The lingam is bathed in milk by one of the priests during the entire period of the phenomenon. It seems as if the Sun is showing admiration to Lord Shiva on an auspicious day. A large crowd of thousands of people gather from far and near and wait for hours to witness this magical event every year on the particular day that is also celebrated as Makara Sankranti. It is on this particular day that the dark interiors of the cave and the linga are illuminated by the rays of the bright sun for some moments every year. ಮಕರ ಸಂಕ್ರಾಂತಿಯಂದು ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು ಒಂದು ಅದ್ಭುತ ಘಟನೆಗೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ದಿನದ ಸಂಜೆಯ ಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆ ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಕಿರಣಗಳು ನಂದಿಯ ಕೊಂಬುಗಳ ನಡುವಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕಮಾನಿನ ಮೂಲಕ ಹಾದು ಹೋಗಿ, ಗುಹೆಯ ಒಳಗಿರುವ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವನ್ನು ಸ್ಪರ್ಶಿಸಿ, ಆ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಕಾಶಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ವಿದ್ಯಮಾನವು ನಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ವಾಸ್ತುಶಿಲ್ಪಿಗಳ ತಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯದ ದ್ಯೋತಕವಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಅದ್ಭುತ ಘಟನೆಗೆ, ಪ್ರತಿ ವರ್ಷವೂ, ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಭಕ್ತರು ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಯಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಜನವರಿ 13 ರಿಂದ 16 ರ ನಡುವೆ ಮತ್ತು ನವೆಂಬರ್ 26 ರಿಂದ ಡಿಸೆಂಬರ್ 2 ರ ನಡುವೆ ಸೂರ್ಯನು ಮತ್ತೆರಡು ಬಾರಿ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವನ್ನು ಸ್ಪರ್ಶಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗಿದೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಒಳಗೆ ಬೇರೆ ಪ್ರತಿಮೆಗಳೂ ಇವೆ. ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, ಎರಡು ತಲೆ, ೭ ಕೈಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ೩ ಕಾಲುಗಳಿರುವ ಅಗ್ನಿಮೂರ್ತಿಯ ಪ್ರತಿಮೆಯನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇವತೆಯು ಒಂದು ಬಗೆಯ ಕಣ್ಣಿನ ತೊಂದರೆಯನ್ನು ನಿವಾರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯು ಭಕ್ತರಲ್ಲಿದೆ.
