Sri Gurupadaswamy was living in Harapanahalli during the pre-independence period and was always engaged in social service. Born to Sri Chennaveeraiah and Smt Kottramma couple of Gurupada Mutt, Sri Gurupada Swamy had his education in Kashi. He had also earned several titles like “Mahavagmi” (eloquent speaker), “Tarka Pandirta” (Scholar of Logic) and “Sanskrit Pandit”. His life’s ambition was to serve the destitute, desolate and the downtrodden. By indulging in social service activities like Anna Dasoha (Providing food to the needy), Jnana Dasoha (Education to the poor) and healthcare services, he was able to literally implement the trait of Dayave Dharmada Mula, which means empathy is the origin of all cult. Prof. G.M. Halaswamy, who took charge of the organisation later in the lineage of Sri Gurupada Swamy, was a personification of humane values like kindness and sympathy. He was providing basic amenities like shelter, food, education, medical assistance etc., to the destitute, desolate and the downtroddened in society. It was on October 18, 1991 that Prof. Halaswamy established Sri Gurupadaswamy Sevashram and breathed his last subsequently. At present, the Ashram has set firm and pragmatic goals to achieve and going about the task in a systematic manner. Residents of the Ashram are of the opinion that although the task ahead is as huge as a mountain, the organisation has done a lot to the uplift of the downtrodden and the destitute from within the resources it has been able to generate, thanks to whole hearted support, cooperation and assistance being showered on it by philonthropists, general public, well-wishers and the community of the devotees of Sri Gurupada Swamy. ಶ್ರೀ ಗುರುಪಾದಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯಪೂರ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಹರಪನಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬದುಕಿದ್ದ ಅನುಭಾವಿಗಳು. ಶ್ರೀ ಗುರುಪಾದದೇವರ ಮಠದ ಶ್ರೀ ಚೆನ್ನವೀರಯ್ಯ ಹಾಗೂ ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಕೊಟ್ರಮ್ಮ ದಂಪತಿಗಳ ಮಗನಾಗಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ ಇವರು ಕಾಶಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡಿ "ಮಾಹಾವಾಗ್ಮಿ" "ತರ್ಕ ಪಂಡಿತ" "ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಪಂಡಿತ" ಎಂಬ ಬಿರುದುಗಳನ್ನು ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದರು. ತಮ್ಮ ಜೀವಿತ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ದೀನದಲಿತರ, ದುಃಖಿತರ ಬದುಕಿಗೆ ಆಸರೆ ಆಗಬೇಕೆಂಬ ತೀವ್ರ ಹಂಬಲ ಇವರದಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಅನ್ನದಾಸೋಹ, ಜ್ಞಾನದಾಸೋಹ, ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯಗಳಂತಹ ಸೇವೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿ ದಯವೇ ಧರ್ಮದ ಮೂಲವೆಂಬುದನ್ನು ಆಚರಣೆಗೆ ತಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಶ್ರೀ ಗುರುಪಾದಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳ ನಂತರದ ತಲೆಮಾರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದ, ಮಾನವೀಯ ಅಂತಃಕರಣದ ಪ್ರತಿರೂಪದಂತಿದ್ದ ಪ್ರೊ. ಜಿ. ಎಮ್. ಹಾಲಸ್ವಾಮಿಯವರು ಸಮಾಜದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಅಸಹಾಯಕರು ಅನಾಥರುಗಳಿಗೆ ಅನ್ನ, ಅರಿವೆ, ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ, ವಸತಿ, ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಅನುಕೂಲಗಳನ್ನು ಕೈಲಾದ ಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಒದಗಿಸಿಕೊಡಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಉತ್ಕಟ ಆಕಾಂಕ್ಷೆ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಈ ನಿಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ 1991 ನೇ ಇಸವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಕ್ಟೋಬರ್ ತಿಂಗಳ 18ನೆಯ ತಾರೀಕಿನಂದು "ಶ್ರೀ ಗುರುಪಾದಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಸೇವಾಶ್ರಮ" ವನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿ ನಿಧನ ಹೊಂದಿದರು. ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ, ಖಚಿತವಾದ ಕಾರ್ಯಯೋಜನೆಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಆಶ್ರಮ ಸಾಗಿಬರುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಸಾಧಿಸಬೇಕಾಗಿರುವುದು ಬೆಟ್ಟದಷ್ಟಿದೆಯಾದರೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿಯವರೆಗೆ ಆಶ್ರಮ ಸಮಾಜಕ್ಕೇನಾದರೂ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರೆ ಅದು ಅನೇಕ ಜನ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರ, ಹಿತೈಷಿಗಳ ಒತ್ತಾಸೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಶ್ರೀ ಗುರುಪಾದದೇವರ ಮಠದ ಭಕ್ತಸಮುದಾಯದ ಸಹಕಾರ, ಔದಾರ್ಯಗಳಿಂದ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗಿರುವಂತಹದ್ದು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ವಿನಮ್ರವಾಗಿ ಸ್ಮರೀಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇವೆ.
