Sudatidevi was the wife of Sage Valmiki. Once, she offered Ganga in Varanasi (Kashi/Benares) a present of diamond studded bangle. The same bangle is believed to have surfaced in an ant-hill in the place of the present–day Halurameshwara. This was followed by Ganga flowing from the ant-hill. Sage Valmiki, after learning this, prayed Ganga to grant favors to the devotees and bless them. He is believed to have consecrated an idol of Ganga. The water appears milky in color hence the name Halurameshwara. Halu, means milk in Kannada. ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳ ಪತ್ನಿ ಸುದತಿದೇವಿ ಕಾಶಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಗಂಗೆಗೆ ಬಾಗಿನ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮರ್ಪಿಸಿದ ವಜ್ರಖಚಿತ ಕಡಗ ಈ ಊರಿನ ಹುತ್ತದಲ್ಲಿ ದೊರಕಿತೆಂದೂ, ಆಗ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಗಂಗೋದ್ಭವವೂ ಆಯಿತೆಂದೂ, ಈ ವಿಷಯ ತಿಳಿದ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ನೆಲೆ ನಿಂತು ಬರುವ ಭಕ್ತರ ಅದೃಷ್ಟಾನುಸಾರ ಬೇಡಿದ ಪ್ರಸಾದ ನೀಡೆಂದು ಗಂಗೆಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸಿ, ಗಂಗಾಮಾತೆ ವಿಗ್ರಹ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಿ ರಾಮೇಶ್ವರದತ್ತ ಹೊರಟರೆಂದೂ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಿದೆ. ಹಾಲಿನ ಬಣ್ಣದ ನೀರು ಉದ್ಭವಿಸಿದ ಈ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ತಾವು ಹೊರಟಿದ್ದ ರಾಮೇಶ್ವರದ ಹೆಸರು ಸೇರಿಸಿ ಹಾಲು ರಾಮೇಶ್ವರ ಎಂದು ನಾಮಕರಣ ಮಾಡಿದರು ಎನ್ನಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

This temple was under the patronage of the Vijayanagar rulers and subsequently, the vassals of Chitradurga. It is believed that King of Mysore Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar had visited this temple and received a silver cradle from the wish-delivering spring, assuring the king that he would beget a son in future. Dr. Veerendra Heggade of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala had also visited this place and offered a Seva here. He also inaugurated a project named,”Pragati Ganga”. Srikshetra Halu Rameshwara temple complex houses temples of several other deities, including those dedicated to Ganga, Sri Halu Rameshwara, Sri Seetharama, Sri Mulaganga, Bedara Kannappa and Sri Panchalingeshwara. An old Ashwaththakatte is there from time immemorial. Interestingly, there is a rare temple here dedicated to Sudati Devi, the wife of the author of great Hindu epic of Ramayana, Sri Valmeeki Maharishi, who was responsible for the emergence of Ganga here from an ant-hill. An idol of Nandi has been installed at the place, where the ant-hill was existing then. Ponds called Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati are existing here. An idol of Ganga is believed to have been installed by Sage Valmiki near the pond here. Devotees offer prayers to Ganga on the banks of the pond and seek to know whether their desires would be fulfilled or not. As a token of good omen, certain items, including turmeric powder, Kumkum, fruits, sweets, betel leaves and betel nut, appear on the water surface, if the divine will is positive, according to a common belief here. ಶ್ರೀ ಹಾಲು ರಾಮೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಹಿಂದೆ ವಿಜಯನಗರದ ಅರಸರು ಹಾಗೂ ದುರ್ಗದ ಪಾಳೆಯಗಾರರು ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಪಡಿಸಿದ್ದರೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮೈಸೂರು ಮಹಾರಾಜರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಶ್ರೀ ಜಯಚಾಮರಾಜ ಒಡೆಯರ್ ಅವರು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದು ಗಂಗೆಯನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಿ ಸಂತಾನ ಕರುಣಿಸುವಂತೆ ಕೋರಿದಾಗ, ಅವರಿಗೆ ಬೆಳ್ಳಿ ತೊಟ್ಟಿಲು ಬಂದಿತೆಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಿಂದೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಆಗಮಿಸಿದ್ದ ಧರ್ಮಸ್ಥಳದ ಧರ್ಮಾಧಿಕಾರಿ ಡಾ. ವೀರೇಂದ್ರ ಹೆಗ್ಗಡೆಯವರು, ಪ್ರಗತಿ ಗಂಗಾ ಯೋಜನೆಯನ್ನು ಉದ್ಘಾಟಿಸಿ, ಶ್ರೀ ಹಾಲು ರಾಮೇಶ್ವರ ಹಾಗೂ ಗಂಗಾಮಾತೆಯನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಈ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಹಾಲುರಾಮೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯ, ಗಂಗಾದೇವಿಯ ದೇವಾಲಯ, ಶ್ರೀ ಸೀತಾರಾಮರ ಗುಡಿ, ಶ್ರೀಮೂಲ ಗಂಗಾ ಗುಡಿ, ಶ್ರೀ ಪಂಚಲಿಂಗೇಶ್ವರ ಗುಡಿ, ಬೇಡರ ಕಣ್ಣಪ್ಪ ದೇವಾಲಯ ಹಾಗೂ ಬಹಳ ಹಳೆಯದಾಗಿರುವ ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥಕಟ್ಟೆಯಿದೆ. ಈ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಂಗೆ ಆವಿರ್ಭವಿಸಲು ಕಾರಣರಾದ ಶ್ರೀ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳ ಪತ್ನಿ ಸುದತಿದೇವಿಯವರ ವಿಗ್ರಹವೂ ಇದೆ. ಹಿಂದೆ ಹುತ್ತವಿದ್ದ ಜಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಸುಗಲ್ಲು ಹಾಕಿ ಅದರ ಮೇಲೆ ನಂದಿಯ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುವ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬರೂ ಮೊದಲು ಮೂಲ ಗಂಗಾದೇವಿಯ ದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡಿ ನಂತರ ರಾಮೇಶ್ವರನ ದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಗಂಗಾ, ಯಮುನಾ ಹಾಗೂ ಸರಸ್ವತಿ ಎಂಬ ಮೂರು ಕೊಳಗಳಿವೆ. ಗಂಗಾ ಕೊಳದ ಮೇಲೆ ಶ್ರೀ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಿದ ಗಂಗಾದೇವಿಯ ವಿಗ್ರಹವಿದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಗಂಗಾಮಾತೆಯ ಪೂಜೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದ ನಂತರ ಭಕ್ತರು, ಕೊಳದ ನಾಲ್ಕೂ ಕಡೆ ಕುಳಿತು ತಮ್ಮ ಬಯಕೆಯು ಈಡೇರುತ್ತದೆಯೋ ಇಲ್ಲವೋ ಎಂದು ಬಿನ್ನವಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರ ಮನದಾಸೆಯು ಈಡೇರಲ್ಪಡುವುದಾದರೆ, ಅವರಿಗೆ ಶುಭ ಸಂಕೇತವಾದ ಬಿಲ್ವಪತ್ರೆ, ಅರಿಶಿನ, ಕುಂಕುಮ, ಬಳೆ, ಬಿಚ್ಚೋಲೆ, ಅಡಿಕೆ, ಹೊಂಬಾಳೆ, ಸಿಹಿ, ಫಲಪುಷ್ಪ, ತಾಂಬೂಲ ಇತ್ಯಾದಿ ವಸ್ತುಗಳು ಬರುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
