ವೆಂಕೀ ಎಂಬ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳು ಎರಡು ಸಹಸ್ರ ವರ್ಷ ತಪಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡಿದಾಗ ಭದ್ರಾನದಿಯ ತಟದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಶ್ರೀ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀನರಸಿಂಹ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ಭಗವದಾಜ್ಞೆಯಾಗಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಶ್ರೀ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀನರಸಿಂಹ ದೇವರ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪನಾ ಕಾರ್ಯವು ನಡೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿತೆಂದೂ, ವೆಂಕೀ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳು ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಮೂಲಪುರುಷರಾದುದರಿಂದ, ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಸುತ್ತ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಾದ ನಗರವನ್ನು ವೆಂಕೀಪುರವೆಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಯಿತೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಾಲಾನುಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಯ್ಸಳದ ದೊರೆ ವಿಷ್ನುವರ್ಧನನ ಮೊಮ್ಮಗ ವೀರನರಸಿಂಹನು ಜೈತ್ರಯಾತ್ರೆ ಕೈಗೊಂಡು ವಿಜಯ ಸಾಧಿಸಿದ ಕಾರಣ ವೆಂಕೀಪುರದ ಶ್ರೀ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀನರಸಿಂಹನಿಗೆ ೧೨೨೬ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂದರೆ ವ್ಯಯನಾಮ ಸಂವತ್ಸರದಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿ, ಪುನರ್ಪ್ರತಿ ಷ್ಠಾಪನಾಕಾರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಪೂರೈಸಿದನು. ನಂತರ, ಈ ನಗರದ ಸುತ್ತಲಿದ್ದ ದೇವನರಸೀಪುರ, ಬಾಬಳ್ಳಿ, ಕೋಮಾರನಹಳ್ಳಿ ಮತ್ತು ವಾರಂದೂರು ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳುವಳಿಯಾಗಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದನೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಭವಿಷ್ಯತ್ ಪುರಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು ದಂಡಕಾರಣ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಬೆಂಕೀಪುರವೆಂದೂ, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಲಭಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಕಬ್ಬಿಣದ ಅದಿರನ್ನು ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸಿ ಅಸ್ತ್ರ-ಶಸ್ತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶವು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧಿ ಪಡೆದಿತ್ತೆಂದೂ ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ತ್ರೇತಾಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಭದ್ರಪುರಿ, ಭದ್ರಾಪುರ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು, ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀನರಸಿಂಹನ ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಶಕ್ತಿದೇವತೆಯೆಂದು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದ್ದ ಶ್ರೀ ಶಾರದಾಮಾತೆಯು ಸಾನ್ನಿಧ್ಯವಿದ್ದ ಕಾರಣ ಈಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀಪುರವೆಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಯಿತು. ರಾಮಾಯಣಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ, ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಮನಿಗೆ ವಶಿಷ್ಠಮುನಿಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಶ್ರೀ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀನರಸಿಂಹನ ದರ್ಶನ ಪಡೆಯಬೇಕೆಂದು ಹೇಳಿದ ಕಾರಣ, ಶ್ರೀರಾಮನು ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಆಗಮಿಸಿ ದರುಶನ ಪಡೆದನೆಂದೂ ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮುಂದೆ, ದ್ವಾಪರಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಭೀಮಸೇನದೇವರು ದರ್ಶನ ಪಡೆಯಲು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಶ್ರೀ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀನರಸಿಂಹನ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಸಂದರ್ಶಿಸಿದ್ದರೆಂದೂ ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. Sage Venki is said to have undertaken a penance for two thousand years and while bestowing the boon, Lord advised the sage to ensure consecration of Lord Lakshminarasihma on the banks of River Bhadra. As Sage Venki was the originator of this town, the place was called after him. Hence, the original name of the place was Venkipura. Later on, in 1226 A.D., when Veeranarasihma, grandson of Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana, constructed a temple to commemorate one of his victories. In addition, Veeranarasihma gifted nearby villages Devanarasipur, Baaballi, Komaranahalli and Varandur to facilitate daily puja. In Bhavishyatpurana, the place has been identified as Benkipura. As there was a huge deposit of iron ore, arrows and other war weapons were being produced at this place and it had become very popular. During the Treta Yuga (era), the place was called Bhadraapura or Bhadrapuri. Outside the sanctum sanctorum, Shaktiswarupini Sri Sharadamba has been installed and therefore this place was also being addressed as Lakshmeepura. During Tretayuga, Srirama had visited this temple as per the directions of the then royal preceptor Sri Vasishtha. Later, during Dwaparayuga, Bheemasena, one of the Panchapandavas, had visited Sri Lakshminarasihma Temple here.
