Sri Mallikarjunaswamy temple at Basavanagudi in Bengaluru has a history of about 300 years. When Chikkadevaraja Wodeyar bought Bengaluru from Quasim Khan in 1689, he is believed to have appointed three subordinates to look after the affairs of Bengaluru. Achyutaraya was one of them and he built and developed some temples in Bengaluru, including Sri Mallikarjunaswamy temple. Initially, a simple Mantap was constructed and a Linga was installed in it. In 1799, when the British army led by General Harris invaded Bengaluru, the residents of Bengaluru fled these localities for safety. The temple of Sri Mallikarjunaswamy became incognito. During the early 20th century, when Sri Bellave Venkatanaranappa, a lecturer of Science at Central College, Bengaluru, was trying to build a house, he came across a Shivalinga. He went through the records and studied the history of this temple. He is credited with initiating the construction of Sri Mallikarjunaswamy temple. He bought stones in an auction. In 1903, Sri Malllikarjunaswamy temple was consecrated. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಹಳೆಯ ಬಡಾವಣೆಗಳಲ್ಲೊಂದಾದ ಬಸವನಗುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸನ್ನಿಧಿ ರಸ್ತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನಸ್ವಾಮಿ ದೇವಾಲಯವಿದೆ. ಸುಮಾರು 300ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಇತಿಹಾಸವಿರುವ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು, ಮೈಸೂರ ಚಿಕ್ಕದೇವರಾಜ ಒಡೆಯರ್‌ರ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಟ್ಟಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಮೈಸೂರ ಅರಸರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಶ್ರೀ ಚಿಕ್ಕದೇವರಾಜ ಒಡೆಯರ್‌ಅವರು 1689ರಲ್ಲಿ, ಖಾಸಿಮ್ ಖಾನ್ ಎಂಬವನಿಂದ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರನ್ನು ಕೊಂಡರೆಂದು ಇತಿಹಾಸವು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಆಗ ಅಚ್ಯುತರಾಯರೆಂಬುವರನ್ನು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಆಡಳಿತಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ನೇಮಿಸಿಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಈತನೇ ಶ್ರೀ ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನಸ್ವಾಮಿ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಕಾರಣಪುರುಷನೆನ್ನಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆಗ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವನ್ನು ಕೇವಲ ಒಂದು ಮಂಟಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು ಎಂಬ ಐತಿಹ್ಯವಿದೆ. ಮುಂದೆ, 1799ರಲ್ಲಿ, ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷರ ಸೇನಾನಿ ಹ್ಯಾರಿಸ್ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರನ್ನು ಕೈವಶ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು, ಪ್ರಜಾ ಪೀಡಕನಾದಾಗ ಭಯಭೀತರಾದ ಜನರು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಿಂದ ಪಲಾಯನ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಆ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳು ಪೋಷಣೆಯಿಲ್ಲದಂತಾಗಿ, ಗಿಡಗಂಟಿಗಳು ಬೆಳೆದು ಶಿಥಿಲವಾದವು. ಹೀಗೆ ಶಿಥಿಲವಾದ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ದೇವಾಲಯವೂ ಒಂದಾಗಿತ್ತೆಂದು ಇತಿಹಾಸ. 20ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಆದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಸೆಂಟ್ರಲ್ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಅಧ್ಯಾಪಕರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಶ್ರೀ ಬೆಳ್ಳಾವೆ ವೆಂಕಟನಾರಣಪ್ಪನವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಮನೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಲು, ನಿವೇಶನದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಗೆತವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿಸಿದಾಗ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವೊಂದು ದೊರಕಿತೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ನಂತರ, ಅವರು ಈ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗದ ಇತಿಹಾಸವನ್ನು ಪತ್ತೆ ತರದೂದು ಮಾಡಿಸಿ, ಶ್ರೀ ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನಸ್ವಾಮಿ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಪುನರ್ನಿಮಾಣಕ್ಕೆ ಮುಂದಾದರು ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿದು ಬಂದಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಗೆ, ವೆಂಕಟನಾರಣಪ್ಪನವರು ೪೦ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ದುಡಿದರು. ಹರಾಜು ಹಾಕಲಾದ ಕೋಟೆಯ ಹಳೆ ಕಲ್ಲುಗಳನ್ನು ತಂದು, ಆ ಕಲ್ಲುಗಳಿಂದ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿಸಿದರು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ೧೯೦೩ರಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನಸ್ವಾಮಿ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಈಗಿನ ರೂಪ ಪಡೆಯಿತು.

Sri Mallikarajunaswamy temple is facing the east. Its construction is in Dravidian style. A Dhwajasthambha or flag-pole is in the forefront of the temple. The idol of Sri Mallikarjunaswamy has been consecrated in the sanctum. A tiny idol of a bull facing the Shivalinga is in front of the sanctum sanctorum. Lord Ganapati has been consecrated to the right of the sanctum sanctorum of Sri Mallikarjunaswamy. To the left is an idol of Parvati, called Bhramaramba. Adjacent to Lord Ganapati, an idol of Sri Suryanarayana carved in marble has been installed. An idol of Sri Lakshminarayana carved in marble in a rare posture has been installed in front of this Suryanarayana Swamy. Three miniature temples have been constructed in the exteriors of Sri Mallikarjunaswamy temple. To the left of the temple, an idol of Sri Adi Shankaracharya was consecrated in the presence of the Pontiff of Sringeri Shivaganga Mutt, Sri Sri Visveshwaranada Bharati. A Navagraha temple has been set up in the front. To the right, a small temple for Sri Subrahmanya Samy has been constructed. ಶ್ರೀ ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಪೂರ್ವಾಭಿಮುಖವಾಗಿ ಕಟ್ಟಲಾಗಿದೆ. ದ್ರಾವಿಡಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ, ಭ್ರಮರಾಂಬಾದೇವಿ, ಗಣಪತಿ, ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯ, ಸೂರ್ಯನಾರಾಯಣ, ಹಾಗೂ ಶ್ರೀ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀನಾರಾಯಣರ ವಿಗ್ರಹಗಳ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಮುಂಬಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ನಂದಿಯ ಧ್ವಜಸ್ಥಂಭವಿದೆ. ಒಂದು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ನಂದಿಯ ಪ್ರತಿಮೆಯನ್ನು ಶ್ರೀಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನಸ್ವಾಮಿಯ ಗರ್ಭಗೃಹದ ಮುಂದೆ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಸ್ವಾಮಿಯ ಬಲಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಣಪತಿಯ ವಿಗ್ರಹವಿದೆ. ಬದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಸೂರ್ಯನಾರಾಯಣಸ್ವಾಮಿಯ ವಿಗ್ರಹವಿದೆ. ಇದನ್ನು ಅಮೃತಶಿಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆತ್ತಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಎದುರು ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಪರೂಪದ ಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಶ್ರೀ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀನಾರಾಯಣಸ್ವಾಮಿಯ ಅಮೃತಶಿಲೆಯ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯಿದೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಹೊರ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂರು ಪುಟ್ಟ ಗುಡಿಗಳಿವೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಎಡಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಗುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಆದಿಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯನ್ನು 1982ರಲ್ಲಿ ಶೃಂಗೇರಿ ಶಿವಗಂಗಾ ಮಠಾಧೀಶರಾದ ಶ್ರೀ ವಿಶ್ವೇಶ್ವರಾನಂದ ಭಾರತಿಯವರ ಸಮ್ಮುಖದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದರ ಎದುರು ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ನವಗ್ರಹಗಳ ಗುಡಿ ಇದೆ. ದೇಗುಲದ ಬಲ ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯಸ್ವಾಮಿ ದೇವಾಲಯವಿದೆ.
