Her Excellency Thangam Thamburatty of Travancore Royal family,was married to a royal family member of Thaliyil mana. She stayed at Thangalam, in a newly built palace. Later that palace was robbed and destroyed by bandits and the princess was assaulted. Out of deep grief the princess put her idols and Puja materials in the well near to the palace and committed suicide. The name Thangalam is derived from her name Thangam. The Travancore Maharaja has given some land for the princess at Thangalam and later the temple was taken over by the Kshethra Samrakshana Samithi and now is under the administration of the committee members who are elected for the tenure. തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍ രാജവംശത്തിലെ തങ്കം തമ്പുരാട്ടിയെ തളിയില്‍ മനയിലെ ഒരു തമ്പുരാന്‍ പുടവകൊടുത്ത് തങ്കളത്ത് കൊണ്ടുവന്ന്‍, കൊട്ടാരമുണ്ടാക്കി താമസിപ്പിച്ചു. ആ കൊട്ടാരം പിന്നീട് കൊള്ളയടിക്കപ്പെടുകയും, അതി ലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന എല്ലാ വസ്തുക്കളും കൈവശപ്പെടുത്തുകയുo, തമ്പുരാട്ടിയെ മാനഭംഗപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. ദുഖം സഹിക്കാനാവാതെ, തന്‍റെ ഉപാസനാമൂര്‍ത്തിയായ കൃഷ്ണവിഗ്രഹവും മറ്റ് പൂജാവസ്തുക്കളും കൊട്ടാരകിണറ്റില്‍ ഇട്ട് തമ്പുരാട്ടി ആത്മഹത്യ ചെയ്തു. തമ്പുരാട്ടിയുടെ പേരും കൊട്ടാരകുളവും ചേര്‍ന്നാണ് ‘തങ്കളo’ എന്ന നാമം വന്നത്. തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍ മഹാരാജാവ് തങ്കളo ദേശവഴി തങ്കതമ്പുരാട്ടിക്ക് കരമൊ ഴിവായി കൊടുത്തിരുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ തങ്കളദേശവഴി തളിയില്‍ മനയ്ക്കലേക്ക് അവകാശപ്പെട്ടതായി. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്‍റെ ഭരണവും പ്രദേശത്തെ ആദായവും മനയ്ക്കലിനയിരുന്നു. അവര്‍ ഈ ദേശത്ത് വരുമ്പോള്‍ താമസിക്കാനായി കോതമംഗലത്തുനിന്ന് തൃക്കാരിയൂര്‍ പോകുന്ന വഴി ഒരു മന നിര്‍മിച്ചു. പിന്നീട് അവര്‍ അത് വില്‍ക്കുകയും, തങ്കളത്തുകാവിന്‍റെ ഭരണം ഏതാനും കുറച്ചു സ്ഥലത്തോടുകൂടി കേരള ക്ഷേത്രസംരക്ഷണ സമിതി ഏട്ടെടുത്തു. തന്നാണ്ടുവര്‍ഷം തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്ന കമ്മറ്റിക്കാര്‍ ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഭരണം മുന്നോട്ട് കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നു.
