The Thangalam Bhagavathy temple is one among the rarest temples in Kerala, which hails a tradition of 3000 years. Its annex temple ‘’ Vadakkan Chovva” is unique with the darshan to the North. In ancient times the Thangalam area was a dense forest. Two sages, who were master and disciple ,came here during a rainy season and stayed inside an ancient cave (Muniyara) and got engaged in meditation( Dhyana) and other Pujas. After the rainy season, they came out of the Muniyara’s in search of village and reached Elambra village, where they installed the idols at Thangalam Desam.
The idols of Balabhadra, Kalarimoorthys – Vadakkan Chova, Raktha Chamundy and KandeKali were installed and started Pujas. In the month of Kumbha, on the day of Bharani, the lamp is lit and festival starts and the Vadakkan Chovva temple festival starts on Karthika day.
ഏകദേശം മൂവായിരം വര്‍ഷം പഴക്കംവരുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രം. തങ്കളo ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്‍റെ ഉപക്ഷേത്രമായ വടക്കന്‍ചൊവ്വ ക്ഷേത്രം കേരളത്തിലെ ചുരുക്കം വരുന്ന വടക്കോട്ട്‌ ദര്‍ശനമുള്ള ക്ഷേതങ്ങളില്‍ ഒന്നാണ്.
പഴയകാലത്ത്, തങ്കളoദേശം ഒരു ഖോരവനമായിരുന്നു. ഗുരു ശിഷ്യന്മാരായി രുന്ന രണ്ടു സന്യാസിവര്യന്മാര്‍ ഒരു മഴക്കാലത്ത് ഇവിടെയെത്തുകയും അതിപുരാതനകാലത്ത് മഹാഋഷിമാര്‍ തപസ്സനുഷ്ടിച്ചിരുന്ന ഒരു മുനിയറ കണ്ടെത്തുകയും അവിടെ പൂജകാര്യങ്ങളുമായി കഴിച്ചുകൂട്ടുകയും ചെയ്തുവെന്ന് പഴമക്കാര്‍ പറയുന്നു. വര്‍ഷകാലത്തിനുശേഷം, മനുഷ്യവാസ സ്ഥലവും ക്ഷേത്രവും അന്വേഷിച്ച്‌ ഇളബ്ര എത്തിച്ചേരുകയും അവിടെയുള്ള ധര്‍മ്മശാസ്താക്ഷേത്രത്തില്‍ ദര്‍ശനംനടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. ആ യാത്രയില്‍ തങ്കളo കാവിരുന്ന പ്രദേശത്ത് എത്തുകയും തന്‍റെ പക്കലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഉപാ സനാമൂര്‍ത്തികളെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച് ആരാധന നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ഗുരുവിന്‍റെ ഉപാസനമൂര്‍ത്തിയായ ബാലഭദ്രയെയും ശിഷ്യനായ കുറുപ്പിന്‍റെ ഉപാസനമൂര്‍ത്തിയായ കളരിമൂര്‍ത്തികള്‍ – വടക്കന്‍ചൊവ്വ, രക്തചാമുണ്ടി, കണ്ടേകാളി – യെയും ബ്രാഹ്മണനായ അദ്ദേഹം ആരാധിച്ചുപോന്നു. ഇതിന്‍റെ പ്രതീകമായാണ് കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ ഭരണിനാളില്‍ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ കുത്തുവിളക്ക്. താലപ്പോലിയോടുകൂടി ഭദ്രകാളിരൂപത്തില്‍ ദീപം തെളിക്കുന്നതോടെയാണ് ഉത്സവം ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. കാര്‍ത്തിക നാളിലാണ്‌ വടക്കന്‍ചൊവ്വക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഉത്സവം.
