The source of the river Souparnika is Kodachadri hills lying near Mookambika temple as a backdrop. The mythology about this temple and river says that a Garuda named Suparna performed penance on this river bank in order to save his mother from the continuous misfortunes and sorrows. Then the Kollur Devi appeared before him to grant her good wishes and at this juncture this garuda requested Devi that this river be Select named after him hence forth and thus this river came to be known as river Souparnika. Souparnika river is said to be not only holy but also to contain rich extracts of valuable herbs as it passes through many mountains that has abundant herbs and rare plants. Souparnika River flows near Mookambika temple and devotees consider it as holy and take a dip before visiting the temple. ಕೊಲ್ಲೂರಿನ ಮೂಲಕ ಹರಿಯುವ ಸೌಪರ್ಣಿಕಾ ನದಿ ನೋಡಲು ಬಲು ಚಂದ. ಕೊಡಚಾದ್ರಿ ಪರ್ವತವು ಈ ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಫಲಿತವಾಗುವ ಅಪರೂಪದ ದೃಶ್ಯ. ಈ ನದಿಯ ಉದ್ಭವಸ್ಥಾನವೂ ಸಹ ಕೊಡಚಾದ್ರಿ ಬೆಟ್ಟ. ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಐತಿಹ್ಯವು ಹೇಳುವ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಸುಪರ್ಣನು (ಗರುಡ) ತನ್ನ ತಾಯಿ ವಿನುತಾಳ ಅಳಲುಗಳನ್ನು ಉಪಶಮನಗೊಳಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ದೇವತೆಗೆ ಮೊರೆಯಿಡುತ್ತಾ ಈ ನದಿಯ ದಂಡೆಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಕುಳಿತು ಒಂದು ತಪಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡಿದ. ದೇವತೆಯು ಅವನ ಮುಂದೆ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷಳಾದಾಗ, ಈ ನದಿಯನ್ನು ಇನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ ತನ್ನ ಹೆಸರಿನಿಂದ ಅದರೆ ಸುಪರ್ಣ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರನ್ನೊಳಗೊಂಡಂತಿರುವ ಹೆಸರಿನಿಂದ ಕರೆಯಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದಾಗಿ ಅವನು ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸಿದ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಈ ನದಿಯನ್ನು ಸೌಪರ್ಣಿಕಾ ಎಂಬುದಾಗಿ ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆತ ತಪಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುವ ತಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಈಗಲೂ ಒಂದು ಪುಟ್ಟ ಗವಿಯಿದ್ದು, ಅದನ್ನು "ಗರುಡನ ಗವಿ" ಎಂದೇ ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

Jagadguru Sri Madhwacharya (1238-1317), the proponent of Tatwavada or Dwaita Siddhanta and the third incarnation of Lord Vayu, consecrated the idol of Kadagolu Krishna, which was created by Vishwakarma under the auspices of Lord Krishna during Dwapara Yuga, at Udupi, which is also called as Rajatapeethapura. The place where Sri Madhwacharya consecrated the idol of Lord Krishna is now a renowned pilgrim center called Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt. ವಾಯುದೇವರ ಮೂರನೇ ಅವತಾರರಾದ ಹಾಗೂ ತತ್ವ ವಾದ ಅಥವಾ ದ್ವೈತ ಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಟಾಪನಾಚಾರ್ಯರಾದ ಜಗದ್ಗುರು ಶ್ರೀ ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರು (1238-1317) ದ್ವಾಪರಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಆದೇಶದ ಮೇರೆಗೆ ವಿಶ್ವಕರ್ಮನಿಂದ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ಕಡಗೋಲು ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ರಜತಪೀಠಪುರಿಯೆಂದು ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುವ ಉಡುಪಿ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಟಾಪಿಸಿದರು. ಇದೇ ಇಂದು ಲೋಕಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧವಾದ ಉಡುಪಿಯ ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣ ಮಠವಾಗಿದೆ.
