Historic & Puranic Background of Grahan (Eclipses)

Eclipses have been mentioned and recorded right from Vedic times. Great Indian astrologer Varahamihira, one of the Navaratnas (Nine Jewels) of Emperor Vikramaditya’s court has given the most detailed account about the effects of eclipses in his scripture Brihat Samhita. He is said to have lived around 57 BC.

Sun, in Vedic Astrology, represents Atman (one’s soul), mind and father. It is the elementary source of life. Rahu and Ketu were formed after Swarbhanu had his head and torso apart by Lord Vishnu. After the event of Samudra Manthan (Great Churn), the Amrit Kalash (Pitcher of Elixir) was seized by Asuras (demons). On the request of the Devatas, Lord Vishnu took the Avatar of Mohini and took away the Amrit Kalash in the guise of distributing it to all. Mohini asked Asuras and Devatas to form separate lines and cheated the demons from getting Amrit. Swarbhanu noticed it and disguised himself to have the nectar. He succeeded in gulping down the Amrit he received. Lord Surya (Sun) and Lord Chandra (Moon) identified Swarbhanu and informed Vishnu in the form of Mohini. Lord Vishnu slit his throat using Sudarshana Chakra, thereby separating Swarbhanu’s head from his torso. Because of the effect of Amrit, both the body and the head continued to be alive and started attacking Lord Soorya and Lord Chandra in anger. Lord Vishnu calmed the separated entities and named them Rahu and Ketu. He gave them the status of Graha Devatas and gave several boons. He gave them the powers to punish the sinners. So Rahu and Ketu became Grahas that control the karmic influences. He also granted them to trouble Lord Soorya and Lord Soma for having caused the bodily harm. This came to be called Grahan. When Surya is attacked, it came to be called Surya Grahan (Solar Eclipse). When Moon is attacked, it came to be called Chandra Grahan (Lunar Eclipse).

During the eclipses the rays of the Sun and Moon are harmful, both according to the Hindu scriptures and the scientists. Therefore, it is advisable not to look at them directly with naked eyes. Do not expose yourself to their rays or light. Do not eat or drink anything during the eclipse time as the cooked food could get spoilt during the eclipse. Use of Darbha Grass during eclipse time for protection of the water and stored grains has been mentioned in many scriptures. This is believed to prevent the stored materials from getting contaminated. Keep Darbha on all the stored items like water, milk, curd, etc. Pregnant women are strongly advised to avoid the eclipse rays. Avoid travelling during the eclipse.

However, the Grahan Kaal (Eclipse period) is an excellent time to keep company of God through Prarthanas (Prayers). Any Stotra recital, or any Mantra chanting, done during the eclipse time, can yield many times more results than chanting done during the normal days. Daan or charity carried out during the Grahan Kaal will give you good benefits.

Precautions during Solar Eclipse

• Solar Eclipse mustn’t be seen directly with naked eyes
• Recite Aditya Hridaya Stotram to Lord Soorya
• Chant Aditya Gayitri Mantra
• Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra must be chanted to avoid adverse outcomes
• Avoid use of any items with sharp edges, such as Swords, knives, razor, scissors, etc
• Avoid eating any food items or drinking in this duration

Sutak Kaal is known as an inauspicious time period before the eclipse, when starting several auspicious or fruitful tasks is prohibited. This period begins twelve hours before the solar eclipse and ends with taking a fresh bath after the eclipse ends.

Mantras to Chant on the day of Soorya Grahan (Eclipse)

There are various mantras that can be enchanted to reduce the malefic effects of the Grahan or the Eclipse.

योसौ वज्रधरो देव: आदित्यानां प्रभुर्मत: ।

सहस्रनयन: शक्रो ग्रहपीडां व्यपोहतु ।

मुखं य: सर्वदेवानां सप्तार्चिरमितद्युति: ।

सूर्य परागसंभूतां अग्ने: पीडां व्यपोहतु।

य: कर्मसाक्षी लोकानां धर्मो महिषवाहन: ।

यमश्चंद्रोपरागोत्थां ग्रहपीडां व्यपोहतु ।

रक्षोगणाधिप: साक्षात् नीलांजनसमप्रभ: ।

खड्गहस्तोऽतिभीमश्च ग्रहपीडां व्यपोहतु ॥

नागपाशधरो देव: सदा मकरवाहन: ।

| दानेनानेन नागस्य रक्ष मां वेधजाद्भयात् ||

|| ॐ आदित्याय विदमहे दिवाकराय धीमहि तन्न: सूर्य: प्रचोदयात ||

|| ತಮೋಮಯ ಮಹಾಭೀಮ ಸೋಮಸೂರ್ಯ ವಿಮರ್ದನ |

| ಹೇಮತಾರಾಪ್ರದಾನೇನ ಮಮ ಶಾಂತಿಪ್ರದೋಭವ ||

Some Do’s & Dont’s during Soorya Grahan

• Perform Grahan Snan during sparsha period (if possible in Theertha Kshetras)
• Nirmalya Visarjana to be performed during Grahana, the same Nirmalya should be used for Tarpana.
• During Madhyakaala give tarpanas to the Pitru Devatas.
• Men should perform yathashakti Gayathri Japam, Vayustuti, Vishnu Sahasra Namam, or any other suitable Mantras.
• Women should perform Parayana of Navagraha Stotram, Keshavanama,

Shanaishcharakrutha Narasimha Stotram.

• Do yathashakti daan – During Grahana we must do daan (Giving away) –
  • Dhaanya daan
  • Godaan
  • Suvarna Daan
  • Vastra Daan
• After Grahan moksha perform bath.

Grahana Period is parva kaala. Whatever good deeds carried out during Grahana, is said to fetch more punnya. Two days prior to Grahan and two days after Grahan are Varjya (Not suitable) for Shubha Kaaryas like Bhumi Puja, Griha Pravesh, Marriage and many more. Please do not sleep during Grahan. While doing sparsha snaana, we must do the snaan with the clothes we are wearing. We must use Darbha Grass during eclipse time for protection of the water and stored grains from getting contaminated. Keep Darbha on all the stored items like water, milk, curd, etc. In case of death anniversary occurs on the day of eclipses, regular Shraddha is to be performed only after the eclipse is over.
