History Behind The Composition of Jagadoddharana

The divine inspiration that led to the creation of “Jagadoddharana…” likely had its roots in the spiritual atmosphere of Malur. The tranquil surroundings, combined with the deep sense of devotion that pervaded the village, served as the ideal setting for Sri Purandara Dasa’s spiritual journey and creative expression.

Today, Malur stands as a pilgrimage destination for devotees and admirers of Purandara Dasa’s work. The village is a testament to the enduring legacy of this great saint and his invaluable contribution to the world of devotional music. It reminds us that sometimes, the most profound expressions of devotion emerge from the humblest of places, where the heart is open to the divine and the soul seeks communion with the beloved Lord Krishna.

Purandara Dasa: A Life of Devotion and Music

Purandara Dasa, often referred to as the “Father of Carnatic Music,” lived during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. His birthplace is believed to be in the town of Kshemapura, near Tirthahalli in present-day Karnataka, India. Purandara Dasa’s early life was marked by a prosperous material existence as a wealthy merchant. However, a spiritual transformation led him to renounce his material wealth and devote his life to the worship of Lord Krishna.

Purandara Dasa’s immense contributions to music and devotion have earned him a revered place in both the realms of spirituality and music. Hence, he is called ‘Karnata Sangita Pitamaha’, since he introduced a new system of training in the music through ‘Pillari Geetegalu’.  His works of music are dedicated to Lord Krishna under a Naamankita of “Purandara Vitthala”.

Malur: The Sacred Birthplace of “Jagadoddharana…”

Malur (Formerly Dodda Maraluru), a small village situated near Channapatna (The famous Toy-Town), in Ramanagaram District of Karnataka, holds a significant place in the life of Sri Purandara Dasa and the composition of “Jagadoddharana…” This serene village is famous for the idol of Bala Krishna in the pose of walking on all fours and carrying butter. He is sweetly called “Ambegaalu Krishna”. This idol is a major attraction to the visitors of Sri Aprameya Swamy Temple. Many devotees pray to this Bala Krishna seeking Santana (offspring) and even perform Pujas and Homas.

It is believed that Sri Purandara Dasa, born as Srinivasa Nayaka, spent a long time in Malur, imbibing the values of devotion and music and the serene surroundings.
