Diwali is one of the most important festivals of Hindus celebrated in Karthika masa. It is also known as the “Festival of Lights”. Diwali is a five day long festival wherein family, friends unite together for Pujas, prayers and celebrations in the month of Kartik.

The word Diwali is derived from the Sanskrit word Deepavali which means ‘row of lights’, celebrated in Kartik Maas.

Importance of Kartik Maas

Eighth month in the Hindu Panchangam is Kartik Maas, which is also known as Damodar Maas. Kartik Poornima | Dev-Diwali | Dhatri Havan | Monday, November 27, 2023

The full moon day of Kartik Maas is celebrated with many festivities. This is celebrated as Dev-Diwali in the northern parts of India. Dhatri-Havan dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is an important traditional practice that involves performing Pujas and fire-ceremonies in the woods and sacred herbal gardens.

It is believed that Lord Shiva ended the menace of demon Tripurasura on the day of Kartik Purnima. Hence Kartik Purnima is also known as Tripuri Purnima and Tripurari Purnima.

As per legends of Tripuri Purnima, Tripurasur defeated Gods and took control of the Swargaloka (The heavens). When Lord Shiva ended Tripurasur, Gods were overjoyed and celebrated the day of Kartik Purnima as the day of illuminations. Hence thousands of earthen lamps are lit at all temples as well as at the bank of river Ganga on the day of Kartik Purnima. Also, during the night, Sumangalis or the married women offer lighted lamps to the waterbodies and rivers on betel leaf seeking a long married life and the good health of their husbands.
