According to Puranas, Lakshmi in the form of a small girl asked a sage called Medhavi Rishi, who was doing penance in this region to adopt him. Lord Vishnu came looking for her on his vehicle Garuda. When Garuda spotted the location, Lord Vishnu went and requested the sage for the hand of his adopted daughter. The sage was very happy and performed the Parinaya of Nacchiar and Lord Vishnu. Hence, this temple is popular as Kalyana Kshetra.
