Sri Guru Raghavendraswamy Aradhana 2022 occurring in the month of August 2022 is a major event for all the followers of Sri Rayaru.

Sri Raghavendra Theertharu has been a great Sage / Philosopher of Dwaita Parampare. He has been praised as Kaliyuga Kalpataru, Kaliyuga Kalpavriksha and Guru Rayaru. PurePrayer takes you through the Life and Spiritual Journeys of Sri Guru Raghavendraswamy during the occasion of 351st Aradhana Mahotsav, taking place from August 12, 2022 in many places including Mantralaya.

Sri Raghavendra Tirtha Swamigalu is one of the most popular and foremost saint-philosopher and mystic of india, who is blessing all the devotees every day. His followers throng in lakhs every day in Mantralaya (Andhra Pradesh), where Sri Raghavendra Swamy resides in the magnificent Brindavana to bless one and all. Even to this day, he is residing live inside the Brindavana and is practicing penance on Lord Sri Rama and Hanuman.

Sri Raghavendra Tirtharu is said to be an incarnation of a sage by name “Shankhukarna”. Shankukarna was designated the duty of bringing “Sri Tulasi” leaves for the worship by Lord Brahma. He was ordained to incarnate as Prahlada who preached the Bhagavatha Dharma to one and all. In his later incarnation, he was born as King Bahlika during the Mahabharata and later as Sri Vyasaraja in Kaliyuga.

Life & Journey of Sri Guru Raghavendraswamy

Learning about the life of Sri Guru Raghavedra Swamy can be a very captivating experience, and the different phases of his life from birth, education, marriage, renunciation, his Digvijaya Yatra, visits to many sacred places including Udupi Sri Krishna temple consecrated by the Dwaita Philosopher Madhwacharya, entering to Brindavana and the miracles he performed are equal to reading Puranas.

Lord Krishna states this to Arjuna when preaching Bhagavadgeeta that, learning about Rishis, sages and saints is learning about Sri Krishna himself.

Bhuvanagiri was the birthplace of Sri Raghavendra Swamy who was born as Venkatanatha to Thimmanna Bhatta and Gopikamba couple. The region was thriving under the Vijayanagar Empire. It was described as ‘Bhuvana-Veera-Pattana Seeme’ (ಭುವನವೀರ ಪಟ್ಟಣ ಸೀಮೆ). The house he was born has been preserved.

Education of Venkatanatha

Vidya Math in Kumbakonam was established by Sri Vijayeendra Teertharu. He was responsible for the firm establishment of Dwaita Philosophy in Kumbakonam region. Venkatanatha used to study under Sri Sudheendra Teertha. The study-place was beside the Brindavana of Sri Vijayeendra Teertha and in front of Lord Lakshminarayana Swamy, consecrated by Sri Vyasa Teertharu.

Sri Guru Raghavendra Swamy is said to have visited this temple complex and stayed here. Sri Sumatindra Teertharu in the heritage of Sri Guru Raghavendra Teertharu was a chosen disciple for ascending the seat of Mahasansthan. He defeated many scholars in the court of Mangammal in Madurai and received the reward of a special Gaddige (a cover for the seat on which the saints sit) from Sri Satyapoorna Teertharu. He attained Brundavana in Sri Rangam in 1725.

The incident of Sandalwood-paste

Thirukkattuppally is best remembered for the incident that took place during the Purvashrama of Sri Guru Raghavendra Swamy. Venkatanatha was assigned the job of grinding by some unfamiliar person, when he had come for a Ghoshti (Meaning: A Vedic Conclave). Venkatanatha prepared the sandalwood paste reciting Agnisuktam. When the scholars assembled at the venue applied the paste, instead of giving a soothing effect, the application caused a burning sensation. The host enquired about this and came to know the job was assigned to Venkatanatha by mistake. He apologized for the ghastly error and requested Venkatanatha to provide a quick-fix. Then Venkatanatha recited Varunasuktam and the burning sensation vanished.

Renouncement of Venkatanatha

Sri Guru Raghavendra Teertharu was given the Ashrama Naama by Sri Suddhendra teertharu when he was given Deeksha of renunciation. He adopted the village of Manchale that came to be called Mantralaya. He had himself pronounced during his life time that he would continue to reside in the Brindavana for three hundred and sixty years to bless the devotees.

Pattabhisheka (Initiation and oath of celibacy) of Sri Raghavendra Swamy was performed by Sri Sudheendra Teertha in Vadavur in the presence of Raghunatha Nayak who was ruling Tanjavur.

Also, Sri Rayaru dwelt for twelve long years in Tanjore during the famine and arranged for performance of many Homas and Yagas to alleviate the draught situation. This was during the reign of Vijaya Raghava Nayak. Rayaru spent close to twelve years in Srimushnam. The house he lived in is a popular destination known as Rayara Mane. Srimushnam is famous for Sri Bhuvaraha Swamy temple. Sri Bhuvaraha Swamy temple is one of the eight self-manifest places of Lord Vishnu incarnating as Bhuvaraha.

Mysticism of Sri Raghavendra Swamy

Sri Raghavendra Swamy gave solace and right direction of life to lakhs of people. Miracles happened wherever His Holiness went. An illiterate but yet pious devotee prayed to him in the need of the hour, and miraculously he was able to read and translate a letter of embassy! The miracle made him to adorn the seat of Diwan to the Nawab. The Diwan was none other than Venkanna who became the steadfast devotee of Sri Raghavendra Swamy.

On one occasion, Sri Raghavendraswamy was to perform the worship of lord Rama in the house of a person called Desai. However, the child of Desai accidently fell in the cauldron of Mango juice and succumbed. When this was brought to the notice of His Holiness, he prayed to lord Rama and Hanuman and instantly the child regained life.

Many Haridasas have composed songs praising the life and mysticism of Sri Guru Raghavendra Tirtharu. One such popular composition by Sri Jagannatha Dasaru of Kautalam is mentioned here for the delight of all the followers of Sri Raghavendra Swamy. He is said to have had the benevolence of Sri Rayaru and hence, was always able to see his Antaranga Guru.

This popular song is rendered during the Shayanotsav Seva performed to Sri Rayaru.
