Naga Pratishtha Importance

Naaga Pratishtha or Naga Pratishte is performed to clear the Naaga dosha, Rahu dosha, Ketu dosha, ancestral curses in the family or lineage, difficulty in conception, general blocks and difficulties of life. The pooja will be done to a Naag Shila specially made for that purpose. Abhishekam and Ashtottara Pooja and many other rituals are observed for the Shila for 48 days.

Naga Pratishta is the Puja procedure consisting of installation of Naaga Shila (Nag Shila) or image of Naaga carved in stone in sacred places like Naagabana (Naagvan), Ashwattha tree located near river banks, lakes or waterbodies. Naagabana usually forms the part of a Teertha Kshetra or temples. Naga Pratishta or Naga Pratishtha done in Naga bana, Naga Kshetras and temples dedicated to Lord Subrahmanya, Naga and so on are said to yield better results.

What leads to Sarpa Dosh or Naag Dosh?

According to Indian Jyothisha shaastra (astrology), if any of the ancestors (elders) have knowingly or unknowingly harmed a serpent or snake or destroyed their abode while doing agriculture or building a home, it is bound to attract Sarpa Dosha in the Janma Kundali (Birth-Chart) and affect entire family.

Sarpa Dosha might manifest in the form of childlessness; not having children (Santana); children suffering from various ailments in their life and many others.

This is referred to as Sarp Dosh or Naag Dosh in our Kundli.

Our Veda Shastras and astrology also specify Parihara Pujas that can be performed to rid oneself from these Naga or Sarpa Doshas. Such couples can perform a Naga Pratishta or ‘Naga Pratisthapana puja’, which involves installation of a Naga idol and performing several pujas over a period of time.

Naga Pratishta Vidhi | Naga Pratishthapana Procedure

Uttarayan is said to be an ideal time to perform the Naga Pratishta. The process involves consecration of a serpent image carved in stone at a holy place by making offerings.

Sri Shanmukha Subrahmanya Temple located in Mangodu, Udupi is an important and ancient Sarpa Kshetra and the land of Lord Parashurama. This temple forms one of the four temples dedicated to Lord Kartikeya or Skanda or Subrahmanya.

The deity of Sri Subrahmanya here is special and very unique. He can be seen in the standing position and holding a Paasham (noose) in right hand. He is holding a hooded serpent in the same hand. His left hand is on the waist. Signifying the willingness of the deity to grant the devotees Mano-kaamana or their desires.

Sri Vadiraja Tirtha, who established the two-year Paryaya system among the eight Mathas of Udupi, is said to have mentioned the importance of the Subramanya temples in his treatise named “Teertha Prabandha”.
