About Temple

This 1200 year old Saraswathy temple is situated at Avanamcode, near the Kochi International Airport, Nedumbassery in Ernakulam district. This temple is considered to be one of the 108 Durga temples enshrined by Parasurama. The Devi Vigraham that faces towards west is considered as self-manifested. A partially visible rock is the Prathishta here. Remaining portion of the rock is situated under the ground. On normal days the Vigraham will be decorated by placing a Silver Golakam on top and on special occasions with a Golden Golakam. Lord Siva, Lord Ganapathi and Simha Vahanam are the sub-deities here.

Since the temple is considered as an important one for Vidyarambham, thousands of children come here for Vidyarambham and get the blessings of goddess of knowledge, Saraswathy. As it is a Saraswathy Temple, Vidyarambham is not only done on Navarathri but also on all other days. Jagadguru Sankaracharya was said to have done his Vidyarambham in this temple. As his father got died during his childhood, he was brought up in his mother’s Illam. Therefore, the traditional style of Vidyarambham did not happen. It is said as Aryambha Devi took him to this temple from Kalady for his Vidyarambham.

It is believed that children who do not speak fluently will start speaking without any problems If they offer bell, pen and model of tongue to goddess who is the grantee of all wishes at her Kumaribhavam. It is also believed that students who are bad in their studies and also those who are having weakness in their Mercury planet according to horoscope can have more interest in studying and can succeed in every examination after having Saraswathaghrutham after doing Puja at the temple.

Devi has six sisters and a brother in Vengur, Manikyamangalam, Chengal, Etad, Ezhiparam and Avanamcode. Sankaranarayana Murthy in the temple of Nayathodu is said to have brother bhava.

ആയിരത്തി ഇരുന്നൂറില്‍പരം വർഷങ്ങൾ പഴക്കമുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്, എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ നെടുമ്പാശേരിയിലുള്ള കൊച്ചി അന്തര്‍ദ്ദേശീയ വിമാനത്താവളത്തോട് ചേര്‍ന്ന്‍ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന ആവണംകോട് സരസ്വതീക്ഷേത്രം. പരശുരാമൻ പ്രതിഷ്ടിച്ചു എന്ന് കരുതപ്പെടുന്ന നൂറ്റിയെട്ട് ദുര്‍ഗാക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം. ദേവി പടിഞ്ഞാറോട്ടു ദർശനം ദേവി വിഗ്രഹം സ്വയംഭൂ ആണെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. ഭാഗികമായി പുറത്ത് കാണാവുന്ന ഒരു ശില മാത്രമാണ് പ്രതിഷ്ഠയായിട്ടുള്ളത്. ശിലയുടെ ബാക്കിഭാഗം ഭൂമിക്കടിയിലാണ് നിലകൊള്ളുന്നത് . വിശേഷപ്പെട്ട ദിവസങ്ങളിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയുടെ മുകളിൽ സ്വർണ്ണഗോളകയും , സാധാരണ ദിവസങ്ങളിൽ വെള്ളി ഗോളികയും വെക്കുകയാണ് പതിവ്. ശിവൻ, ഗണപതി, സിംഹവാഹനം, എന്നിവയാണ് ഇവിടുത്തെ ഉപദേവതകള്‍.

കേരളത്തിലെ പ്രധാന വിദ്യാരംഭ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നായി ഗണിക്കപ്പെടുന്നതിനാൽ ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് കുരുന്നുകളാണ് ഇവിടെ ആദ്യാക്ഷരമെഴുതി വിദ്യാരംഭം കുറിച്ച് ജ്ഞാനദേവതയായ സരസ്വതീപ്രസാദം നേടുവാനെത്തിച്ചേരുന്നത്. സരസ്വതീ ക്ഷേത്രമായതിനാൽ നവരാത്രി കാലത്തിൽ മാത്രമല്ല, എല്ലാ ദിവസങ്ങളിലും എഴുത്തിനിരുത്താനുള്ള സൗകര്യമുണ്ടെന്നുള്ളത് ഇവിടത്തെ പ്രത്യേകതയാണ്. ജഗദ്ഗുരു ശങ്കരാചാര്യരെ എഴുത്തിനിരുത്തിയത് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലാണെന്ന് പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. ചെറുപ്പത്തിൽ തന്നെ ആചാര്യസ്വാമികളുടെ അച്ഛൻ മരിച്ചുപോയതിനാൽ അമ്മയുടെ ഇല്ലത്തായിരുന്നു വളർന്നത്. അതുകൊണ്ടു തന്നെ പാരമ്പര്യ രീതിയിൽ ഉള്ള എഴുത്തിനിരുത്തൊന്നും നടന്നില്ല. പിന്നീട്, കാലടിയിൽ നിന്നും ഇവിടെ വന്നാണ് ആര്യാംബാ ദേവി അദ്ദേഹത്തെ എഴുത്തിനിരുത്തിയതെന്നാണ് ഐതീഹ്യം.

ആവണംകോട് ദേവീക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പോയി സർവാഭീഷ്ട വരദായിനിയും ശാന്ത സ്വരൂപിണിയുമായ കുമാരീ ഭാവത്തിലുള്ള ദേവിക്ക് നാവിന്‍റെ രൂപം, മണി, നാരായം എന്നിവ നടയ്ക്കു വെച്ച് പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ചാൽ സ്പഷ്ടമായി സംസാരിക്കാത്ത കുട്ടികൾ സ്ഫുടമായി സംസാരിക്കുമെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. പഠനത്തിൽ മോശമായ കുട്ടികളും ജാതകത്തിൽ ബുധന്‍ ബലക്കുറവുള്ളവരും ഇവിടെ വന്നു പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ചു, ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പൂജിച്ച സാരസ്വതഘൃതം കഴിച്ചാൽ പഠനത്തിൽ താല്പര്യം വരികയും പരീക്ഷാവിജയമുണ്ടാകുകയും ചെയ്യുമത്രേ .

വേങ്ങൂർ, മാണിക്യമംഗലം, ചെങ്ങൽ, എടാട്ട്, ഏഴിപ്രം, ആവണംകോട് എന്നിങ്ങനെ ദേവിക്ക് ആറ് സഹോദരിമാരും ഒരു സഹോദരനും ഉണ്ടെന്നാണ് സങ്കല്പം. നായത്തോട് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ശങ്കരനാരായണ മൂർത്തിക്കാണ് സഹോദരഭാവം കല്പിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്.
