Kidangoor Sri Subramanya Swami temple, said to be more than 3000 years’ old, is great with many fascinations in Kerala. Like a beautique, on the Meenachil river shore, the temple situates in Kottayam District, a kilometer away from the Ettumanur-Punjar Highway by the south side of Kidangur- Manarcadu road.
Historically Kidangur is one amongst the 64 Namboothri villages in Kerala. It was the boundary of the Thekkumkur- Vadakkumkur kingdoms. The 14 Brahmin families of Kidangur were the owners of this temple. Out of the 14, few Brahmin families had not have male descendants. So those who had male progenies (members) became possessors of the temple. This custom is still followed here. Though now the temple is well known as Sri Subrahmanya Swami temple, Lord Vishnu is equally honored here and the people address him as Vadakkumthevar. As the main deity here is Lord Subrahmanyan in brahmachari bhava, women are asked not to enter the nalambalam. But for invoking the lord, they are permitted to posit themselves in an Idanazhi, nearby of which the construction was made accordingly.
The presence of Shakthi Swaroopini Bhuvaneshwari is inside the Kootthambalam, facing the southern side. The Goddess facing the southern side is few in Kerala. The consecrated idol of the Goddess and the Koothambalam were crafted by Perumanthachan, a synonym of ancestral vasthu vidya. His excellent craftsmanship is unveiled in every inch of the artworks. Here, pakidachari style, a highly complex measure, is followed to construct the Koothambalam. Another rare phenomenon here is a Kurunthotti pillar. According to the experts, it will take a period of more than 4000 years to come to such a huge size for a medicinal plant like Kurunthotti. Brahmachari kootthu is a ceremonial offering played in Koothambalam which is believed to give offsprings to couples devoid of. As the main idol of the temple is Lord Subrahmanya in his celebate form, this special performance is offered. ‘Guruthi’ is performed for the Devi inside the Kuthambalam by devotees for the removal of all their problems and for the destruction of enemies. Lord Dharmasastha, enshrined in the southern side of the main temple, which was renovated recently, is believed to cover Sani dosha of the devotees.
The 10 days’ annual festival in the month of ‘Kumbham, ‘Thrikarthika’ in the month of ‘Vrichikam’ and the ‘Thaipooyam’ in the month of Makaram are the important festivals celebrated here. Devotees visit the temple in large numbers to perform ‘Shastivratam’ on the 6th day after the ‘Amavasya’ which is considered to be auspicious. The temple is easily reachable by Bus, Car & Auto Rikshas. The visiting time here is 4.30 AM to 11.45 AM and 5 to 7.30 in the evening.

എടുത്തുപറയേണ്ട വളരെ വളരെ സവിശേഷതകളുള്ള കേരളത്തിലെ ഒരു മഹാക്ഷേത്രമാണു് കിടങ്ങൂർ ശ്രീ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം. മൂവായിരത്തോളം വര്ഷം പഴക്കമുണ്ടെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ മനോഹര ക്ഷേത്രം, കിടങ്ങൂർ ഗ്രാമത്തിൻറെ ഹൃദയധമനി പോലൊഴുകുന്ന മീനച്ചിലാറിൻറെ തീരത്തെ പ്രശാന്ത സുന്ദരവും പ്രൗഢവുമായ ഭൂവിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഇവിടുത്തെ ക്ഷേത്ര മതിൽക്കകത്ത് വടക്കുവശത്തായി ശ്രീ മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിനെ തുല്യ പ്രാധാന്യത്തോടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ആദ്യകാലത്ത് മഹാവിഷ്ണു ക്ഷേത്രമായിരുന്ന ഇവിടം, പിന്നീട് ശ്രീ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ സ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രമായി മാറിയതിന് പിന്നിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ഐതീഹ്യമുണ്ട്.

പരശുരാമനാൽ സംസ്ഥാപനം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട 64 നമ്പൂതിരി (മലയാള ബ്രാഹ്മണർ) കുടുംബങ്ങൾ കിടങ്ങൂർ ഗ്രാമത്തിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നു എന്നു പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. അതിൽപ്പെട്ട 14 കുടുംബങ്ങളായിരുന്നു ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പൂർവകാല ഉടമസ്ഥന്മാർ. പിൽക്കാലത്തു്, ആ പതിന്നാലു കുടുംബങ്ങളിൽ പല കാരണങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ടും താവഴി നിലനിർത്തുവാൻ പറ്റാതെ വന്ന ചില കുടുംബക്കാരൊഴികെയുള്ള മറ്റു ഇല്ലക്കാർ ചേർന്നാണു ഭരണം തുടർന്നു വന്നത്. ഇപ്പോഴും അത് തുടരുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.

ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഒരു പ്രധാന പ്രത്യേകത ഇവിടെയുള്ള വിശിഷ്ടമായ കൂത്തമ്പലമാണ്. കേരള വാസ്തുവിദ്യയുടെ കുലപതിയായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന പെരുംതച്ചനാണ് കൂത്തമ്പലം നിര്‍മ്മിച്ചതെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. അത്യപൂര്‍വവും അതി സാങ്കേതികവുമായ പകിടചാരി എന്ന കണക്കിലാണ് കൂത്തമ്പലം നിര്‍മ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. തെക്കോട്ട് ദര്‍ശനമായിരിക്കുന്ന ശക്തി സ്വരൂപിണി ഭഗവതിയുടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയുള്ള കൂത്തമ്പലത്തിലേക്ക് സ്ത്രീകള്‍ക്ക് പ്രവേശനമില്ല.

ഔഷധ ഗുണങ്ങളുള്ള കുറുന്തോട്ടിച്ചെടിയുടെ ഒറ്റത്തടിയിൽ തീർത്ത ഒരു വലിയ തൂണ് ഈ കൂത്തമ്പലത്തിൽ കാണാം. ഔഷധ സസ്യമായ കുറുന്തോട്ടി ഇത്രയും വലിപ്പം വയ്ക്കണമെങ്കില്‍ കുറഞ്ഞത് നാലായിരം വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ എങ്കിലും വേണമെന്നാണ് വിദഗ്ദരുടെ അഭിപ്രായം. മറ്റു അരങ്ങുകളിൽ കാണുവാൻ കഴിയാത്ത “ബ്രഹ്മചാരിക്കൂത്തെ”ന്ന വിശേഷ കൂത്തും ഇവിടെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ടു്. സന്താനലബ്ധിക്കായുള്ള വഴിപാടായിട്ടാണു് ഇതു സമർപ്പിക്കാറുള്ളത്. ഭഗവതി പ്രീതിക്കായി ചൊവ്വ, വെള്ളി ദിവസങ്ങളില്‍ കൂത്തമ്പലത്തിലമ്മയ്ക്ക് ഗുരുതി വഴിപാട് നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു.

കുംഭ മാസത്തിലെ പത്ത് ദിവസത്തെ വാര്‍ഷികോത്സവം, വൃശ്ചികത്തിലെ തൃക്കാര്‍ത്തിക, മകരമാസത്തിലെ തൈപ്പൂയം എന്നിവയാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന വാര്‍ഷികാഘോഷങ്ങള്‍. എല്ലാ മാസവും വെളുത്ത പക്ഷത്തില്‍ ആചരിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഷഷ്ടി വ്രതാനുഷ്ടാനവും വളരെ വിശേഷമായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇഷ്ടം പോലെ പാര്‍ക്കിംഗ് സൌകര്യവും റോഡ്‌ സൌകര്യവുമുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക് യാതൊരുവിധ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുമില്ലാതെ വളരെയെളുപ്പം തന്നെ എത്തിച്ചേരാവുന്നതാണ്. സന്ദര്‍ശന സമയം രാവിലെ 4.30 മുതല്‍ 11.45 വരെയും വൈകിട്ട് 5 മുതല്‍ 7.30 വരെയും.
