Lord Sri Parameshwaran and Mahavishnu in a single idol together is the rarity and variety here in this temple, built by the Ruler Cheraman Perumal in between AD 800-844. The temple situates at a distance of 30 KMs from Ernakulam town and 1 KM from Cochin International Airport. The Jagathguru Sankaracharya visited the temple with his mother and made worships, is a firm belief here, existing among the inhabitants. This spiritual centre with many peculiarities has only one single idol. But in the ‘Thiruvuthsavam’, a 10 days’ grand fest starting from Makara Sankramam day, 2 flag-masts are erected. The ‘Kolam’ will be one, but with 2 ‘Thidambus’ whereas Prasadashuddhi is performed only once. All other offerings are presented only one time. And, there will be two thanthries too during the festival. The Poojas beginning with Lord Siva, at an interim stage turns towards Lord Vishnu. Hence Naivedyam to serve after Pooja is kept separately. Navakam, Mula, Panchagavyam etc are also stored particularly for different deities. Lord Siva having got married was going unto a meditative mood. This bhava is the prominence and importance of the deity here. Hence this temple is seen to be auspicious and prominent for marriages. At the time of marriage of Lord Shiva, the Devas were making invocations immensely inviting Lord Vishnu for his appearance and presence. The very moment Lord Vishnu was appearing, Lord Siva himself was receiving him hand-in-hand and Sri Mahavishnu was invited to get seated in Sivapeedom, in the legendry behind. Along with the main Deities Lord Siva and Lord Mahavishnu, Lord Ganapathi, Lord Dakshinamoorthi and Goddess Saraswathi are the sub deities, enshrined herein.

ഭഗവാൻ ശ്രീപരമേശ്വരനും ശ്രീമഹാവിഷ്ണുവും ഒരേ വിഗ്രഹത്തിൽ തന്നെ കുടികൊള്ളുന്നു എന്ന കാരണത്താൽ കേരളത്തിലെ അത്യപൂർവമായ പ്രതിഷ്ഠാവിശേഷമുള്ള ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് തിരുനായത്തോട് ശിവനാരായണക്ഷേത്രം. AD 800 –844 കാലത്ത് രാജ്യം ഭരിച്ച, ചേരമാൻപെരുമാൾ നിർമ്മിച്ച ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു ഉദ്ദേശം 1200 കൊല്ലങ്ങളോളം പഴക്കം കാണുന്നുണ്ട്. എറണാകുളത്തെ കാലടിക്കടുത്ത് നായത്തോട് എന്ന സ്ഥലത്താണ് ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ശങ്കരാചാര്യർ തന്റെ അമ്മയോടൊപ്പം ഇവിടെ വന്നു പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ചതായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു നിരവധി സവിശേഷതകളുണ്ട്. ബിംബം ഒന്നേയുള്ളുവെങ്കിലും ഉത്സവകാലത്ത് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ രണ്ടു കൊടിമരങ്ങളാണ് നാട്ടുന്നത്. കോലം ഒന്നും തിടമ്പുകൾ രണ്ടുമാണ് പതിവ്. പ്രസാദ ശുദ്ധി ഒഴികെയുള്ള എല്ലാ ചടങ്ങുകളും രണ്ടു തവണ ചെയ്യും. ശിവന്റെപൂജ തുടങ്ങി ഇടയ്ക്കു വെച്ചാണ് വിഷ്ണു പൂജ തുടങ്ങുക. അതിനാൽ രണ്ടു പാത്രത്തിലാണ് നൈവേദ്യം. മുള, നവകം,പഞ്ചഗവ്യം തുടങ്ങിയവ ഓരോ മൂർത്തികൾക്കും വെവ്വേറെയാണ്. ഉത്സവത്തിന് തന്ത്രിമാരും രണ്ടു പേരുണ്ടായിരിക്കും. വിവാഹം കഴിഞ്ഞു ധ്യാനനിരതനായ ശിവന് പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ളതിനാൽ, വൈവാഹികകർമ്മങ്ങൾക്ക് ക്ഷേത്രം ഉത്തമവേദിയാണെന്നു കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. ദേവകൾ പരമേശ്വര വിവാഹത്തിന് സന്നിഹിതനാകാതിരുന്ന ശ്രീഹരിയെ സ്തുതിക്കുകയും ഭഗവാൻ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടതോടെ ശ്രീഹരിയെ തൃക്കൈ പിടിച്ചു പരമേശ്വരൻ തന്റെ പീഠത്തിലേക്ക് ആനയിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു എന്നാണു പ്രതിഷ്ഠാ സങ്കല്പം.
