Uravappara Sri Subrahmanya Swamy Temple is an ancient temple situated at Thodupuzha in the high range district Idukki, approximately 60 KMs away from Ernakulam town. This 4000 year old temple is situated on a giant rock and is about 2500 feet above the sea level. The main deity of the temple which is also known as the Malayala Pazhani is the self manifested (swayambhoo) idol in Balamuruka bhava (form). This Malayala Pazhani Uravappara Sree Subrahmanya Swamy temple is a very rare one as it is believed that the Devas, Shiddhas and Brahmins perform the pujas and rituals here. Several things which arose during the astrological findings justify the belief. Lord Dharmashastha, Lord Ganapathi & Brahmarakshas are the sub-deities consecrated here in this temple.
The main festival of this temple is conducted on Punartham star date of Makaram month. Next day, the devotees leave the temple after Pooyam thozhal and this tradition is followed since years. Kalasham, Kavady, special Pujas, Abhishekam etc are conducted here in connection with the festival. There are tribes who are spread across various places in Kerala, who still consider the Lord of Uravappara as their God. During the festival period, the devotees among them use to submit the things that help them lead their daily life as an offering. A special water stream (Uravatheertham) will appear at the day time in the valley during the festival season, when the full moon, Pooyam star date and the festival come together. The water in this stream is said to be of medicinal powers. The presence of this stream itself is the reason why this place got the name Uravappara (rock with a water stream). Those who destined to reach this temple which holds a lot of legends and following various rituals put forwarded by great men itself is considered as a blessing.

എറണാകുളം പട്ടണത്തിൽ നിന്നും ഏകദേശം 60 കിലോ മീറ്റർ ദൂരെയായി മലയോര ജില്ലയായ ഇടുക്കിയിലെ തൊടുപുഴയിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന അതിപുരാതനമായൊരു ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ഉറവപ്പാറ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം. സമുദ്രനിരപ്പിൽ നിന്നും ഏകദേശം 2500 അടിയോളം ഉയരെ, ഭീമാകാരമായ ഒരു പാറയുടെ മുകളിലാണ് 4000 കൊല്ലത്തോളം പഴക്കമുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ബാലമുരുക ഭാവത്തിലുള്ള സ്വയംഭൂ സങ്കല്‍പ്പമാണ് മലയാള പഴനി എന്ന പേരിലും പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ. ഒരേ സമയം ദേവന്മാരാലും സിദ്ധാത്മാക്കളാലും ബ്രാഹ്മണരാലും പൂജാദികാര്യങ്ങൾ നടത്തപെടുന്ന ലോകത്തിലെ അപൂർവക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണിത് . ഇതിനെ സാധൂകരിക്കുന്ന പല വസ്തുതകളും അടുത്ത കാലത്ത് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ നടന്ന ദേവപ്രശ്ന വേളയിൽ തെളിഞ്ഞു വന്നിരുന്നു. പ്രധാന ദേവനായ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ ഭഗവാനോടൊപ്പം, ധര്‍മ്മശാസ്താവ്, ഗണപതി, ബ്രഹ്മരക്ഷസ് എന്നീ ഉപദേവതാ പ്രതിഷ്ഠകളും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലുണ്ട്. മകര മാസത്തിലെ പുണർതം നാളിലാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ഉത്സവം. ഉത്സവത്തിന് വരുന്നവർ, പിറ്റേന്ന് പൂയം തൊഴുത് ഇറങ്ങുക എന്നുള്ളതാണ് കാലങ്ങളായി തുടർന്ന് വരുന്ന സമ്പ്രദായം. ഏറെ ദർശന പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ള പൂയം തൊഴീൽ ഈ ജന്മ സുകൃതങ്ങളിലൊന്നായി ഉറവപ്പാറ ദേവഭക്തർ കരുതുന്നു. കലശം, കാവടി ഘോഷയാത്ര, വിശേഷാൽ പൂജകൾ, അഭിഷേകങ്ങൾ എന്നിവ ഉത്സവത്തോടനുബന്ധിച്ച് നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. കാലങ്ങളേറെ കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും ഉറവപ്പാറ ദേവനെ ഉപാസനാമൂർത്തിയായി കരുതുന്ന കേരളത്തിന്‍റെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ ചിതറിക്കിടക്കുന്ന ആദിവാസി ഗോത്ര സമൂഹത്തിൽപെട്ട ഭക്തർ ക്ഷേത്രോത്സവകാലത്ത് അവരുടെ ഉപജീവനത്തിന് ഹേതുവാകുന്ന വസ്തുക്കൾ ഉറവപ്പാറ ദേവന് കാണിക്കയായി അർപ്പിക്കുന്നതിന് മലകയറി തിരിച്ചു പോകുന്ന സമ്പ്രദായം ഇന്നും മുടങ്ങാതെ തുടരുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രോത്സവ സമയത്ത് വെളുത്തവാവും, പൂയം നാളും ഒന്നിച്ചു വരുന്ന അപൂർവ സമയങ്ങളിലെ പ്രഭാതത്തിൽ, അഭിഷേകസമയത്ത് അടിവാരത്ത് ഒരു പ്രത്യേക സ്ഥാനത്ത് ഉറവ തീർത്ഥം പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടും. ഈ തീർത്ഥം ഏറെ ഔഷധ ഗുണമുള്ളതാണ്. ഈ സ്ഥലത്തിന് ഉറവപ്പാറയെന്ന പേര് സിദ്ധിക്കാൻ കാരണമായതും ഈ തീർത്ഥ സാന്നിധ്യമാണ്. ഒരുപാട് ഐതിഹ്യ പെരുമകളും വിവിധ തലങ്ങളിൽപെട്ട മഹാത്മാക്കളുടെ ആരാധനാ സമ്പ്രദായങ്ങൾ ഇപ്പോഴും നടന്നുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഉപാസനാ മൂർത്തി കുടികൊള്ളുന്നതുമായ ഈ ദേവസ്ഥാനത്തു എത്തിച്ചേരുകയെന്നത് ജന്മപുണ്യം തന്നെ.
