Rameswaram is also a well-known Mukti Sthal for performing ancestral rites (ceremonies) like Sharddh, Masik Shraddhas, Pitru Tarpanam, Pind Daan, Mahalaya Amavasya Tarpanams and many other Shraddh karmas.
Rameswaram is a small island and one of the most important Teertha Kshetras in the Gulf of Mannar. It is connected to the mainland of Southern India by Pamban Bridge. Rameswaram is famous for the Jyotirlinga known as “Ramanathaswamy” or “Rameshwara” and one among the ‘Bada Char Dham‘ yatra.
It is said in the Puranas that to get the full blessings and benefits of pilgrimage to Teertha Kshetra of Varanasi, one should tour Rameswaram Mukti Sthal and take the holy dip in the confluence of the two seas of Mahodadhi and Ratnakara.
Lord Ram built a bridge from Sethu Karai near Rameswaram across the sea to Swarnalanka to rescue his consort Sita from the demon king Ravan. Goddess Parvati consecrated here is called Parvatavardhini. Gandhamadana Parvat in the island of Rameswaram is believed to be a portion of the medicinal mountain, Hanuman carried to Lanka to treat Lakshman who had fainted during the battle.
There are as many as 64 Teerthas, considered very holy and devotees take Punyasnana in this Teertha Kshetra. Sacred Shivalingam prepared by Sita, consecrated and anointed by Rama can be seen here. Also consecrated here is the Shivalingam brought by Hanuman goes by the name Vishwalingam. As commanded by Rama, the days first Puja is offered to Vishwalingam.
