The very famous Manickamangalam Karthyayani Devi Temple is situated at approximately 2 kilometers away from Kalady, the birthplace of Adi Sankara and 32 kilometers away from Ernakulam town. Acharya’s beginning is said to be from Manickamangalam, enjoying and experiencing the shower of blessings from Manickapuratthamma. Devi Karthyayani (Durga), the presiding deity is worshipped by millions of devotees not only from Kerala but also from other states of India. The temple is adorned with the self incarnated idol of Parasakthi in the form of Lord Krishna’s Sister. This is one of the 108 famous Durga Devi Temples in Kerala. The temple which was owned by Panayil Pazhur Mana an ancient Namboothiri family of Manickamangalam is now administrated by N.S.S Karayogam No. 1096. The Thanthrik rights go with Puliyannoor Thanthri families. Brahmasree Puliyannoor Anujan Namboothirippadu is the present Thanthri. Lord Dharmashasta, Goddess Elanjikkal Bhagavathy, Goddess Bhadrakali and Nagaraja are the sub-deities of the temple. The 9 days long Manickamangalam pooram which is celebrated in the month of Meenam and the Karthika Lakshadeepam, on Devi’s birth day, Karthika star date in the month of Vrishchikam, celebrated along with the one lakh lamps are the important yearly festivals of the temple.

Just behind the Durga temple a very old Mahadeva Kshethram exists which is believed to be older than the Devi temple. The Prathishta was by Rishi Agasthya and as Manickan is another name of Lord Mahadeva, Bhagwan is treated to be the God of the Land Manickamangalam. Many Sivayogis are believed to have got culminate from this divine land. The prominence of this temple is affirmed as the visitors are prostrating unto the feet of Lord Siva, their Manickamangalathappan, and then only they go to their Mother Manickamangalathamma. 1008/108 Kudam Dhara and Mruthyunjaya Homam are the renowned offerings of this temple. Sivarathri is the Annual festival celebrated here. On the other shore of Manickamangalam lake, a Bhadrakali temple locates. Once a year, Kalamezhuthu Pattu and Mudiyettu are performed on Bharani star date in the month of Kumbham.

എറണാകുളം പട്ടണത്തില്‍ നിന്നും ഏകദേശം 32 കിലോ മീറ്റര്‍ ദൂരെയായി സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന, കാലടിക്കടുത്ത് ജഗന്മാതാവായ സാക്ഷാൽ പരാശക്തിയുടെയും ജഗദ്പിതാവായ സാക്ഷാൽ പരമേശ്വരന്‍റെയും അനുഗ്രഹ വർഷം കൊണ്ട് പരിപാവനമായ, മണ്ണാണ് മാണിക്യമംഗലം. ഈ മഹത്തായ പുണ്യഭൂമിയിലാണ് മാണിക്യമംഗലം കാര്‍ത്യായനി ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രം നിലകൊള്ളുന്നത്. ആദിശങ്കരാചാര്യരുടെ തുടക്കം മാണിക്യമംഗലത്തമ്മയുടെ അനുഗ്രഹ വർഷമാകുന്ന മധു നുകർന്നു കൊണ്ടായിരുന്നു എന്നാണ് ഐതീഹ്യം. ദുർഗാദേവി ഇവിടെ കൃഷ്ണ സഹോദരീ ഭാവത്തിലാണ് ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. വിഗ്രഹം സ്വയംഭൂവാണ്. നൂറ്റിയെട്ട് ദുർഗാക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് പ്രസ്തുത ക്ഷേത്രം. അതി പുരാതന നമ്പൂതിരി ഇല്ലമായിരുന്ന പനയിൽ പാഴൂർ മനയ്ക്കായിരുന്നു ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥാവകാശം. ഇപ്പോൾ ഉടമസ്ഥാവകാശം എൻ.എസ്.എസ് കരയോഗത്തിനാണ്. ക്ഷേത്ര തന്ത്രാവകാശം പുലിയന്നൂർ തന്ത്രി കുടുംബങ്ങൾക്കാണ്. ബ്രഹ്മശ്രീ പുലിയന്നൂർ അനുജൻ നമ്പൂതിരിപ്പാടാണ് ഇപ്പോഴുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രതന്ത്രി. ധർമ്മശാസ്താവ്, ഇലഞ്ഞിക്കൽ ഭഗവതി, നാഗരാജ, ഭദ്രകാളി എന്നിവരാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഉപദേവതാ പ്രതിഷ്ഠകള്‍. മീന മാസത്തില്‍ ആഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന 9 ദിവസത്തെ മാണിക്കമംഗലം പൂരം, ദേവിയുടെ പിറന്നാള്‍ ആയ വൃശ്ചികത്തിലെ കാര്‍ത്തിക ദിവസം ലക്ഷദ്ദീപത്തോടെ ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന കാര്‍ത്തിക ലക്ഷദ്ദീപം എന്നിവയാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന വാര്‍ഷികാഘോഷങ്ങള്‍.

ദുർഗാ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു തൊട്ടുപിറകിലായി അതിപ്രാചീനമായ ഒരു മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രം കൂടിയുണ്ട് .പ്രസ്തുത ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു ദുര്‍ഗാദേവി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലുമധികം പഴക്കമുള്ളതായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രമൂർത്തിയെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചത് അഗസ്ത്യമഹര്‍ഷിയാണെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. മാണിക്യനെന്നത് ശ്രീ മഹാദേവന്‍റെ മറ്റൊരു നാമമായതിനാൽ , ഭഗവാനെ മാണിക്യമംഗലത്തെ ദേശദേവതയായി കണക്കാക്കുന്നു. നിരവധിശൈവയോഗികൾക്ക് നിർവാണം ലഭിക്കാൻ കാരണഭൂതമായ പുണ്യഭൂമിയാണ് മാണിക്യമംഗലം. മാണിക്യമംഗലത്തപ്പനെ വന്ദിച്ച ശേഷമേ ഭക്തർ മാണിക്യമംഗലത്തമ്മയെ വണങ്ങുവാനെത്താറുള്ളൂ എന്നതും പ്രസ്തുത ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്‍റെ പ്രാധാന്യം കാണിക്കുന്നു. മാണിക്യമംഗലം പുഴയുടെ അക്കരെയായി അതിപ്രാചീനമായ ഒരു ഭദ്രകാളി ക്ഷേത്രവും കുടികൊളളുന്നു. അവിടെ വർഷത്തിലൊരിക്കൽ കുംഭ മാസം ഭരണിനാളിൽ കളമെഴുത്തും പാട്ടും, മുടിയേറ്റും അനുഷ്ഠിക്കുന്ന പതിവുണ്ട്.
