The past historians have described Kanakagiri as Sakopamana Shaila, Where, “Sakopamana” means heaven and “Shaila” means a rock or hillock. Sri Kanakagiri Kshetra is located in Chamarajanagar district, at about 58 km from Mysore and 18 km from Chamarajanagar, touching the borderlines of three States of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Kanakagiri, which is very close to Maleyur village, is flanked by a very dense forest covered by a large number of sandalwood and red sanders trees. The various scriptures, sculptures, stone inscriptions, Samadhi Mantaps, caves and taverns in and around Kanakagiri stand as epitomes of the glorious past of the place and a beacon of spirituality for posterity.

Several kings belonging to Ganga, Hoysala dynasties and that of Vijayanagar Empire and Mysore Wodeyars have constructed temples, ponds, lakes, Basdis, forts, Chaityalayas and other structures in Kanakagiri and surrounding places at various points of time.

ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಇತಿಹಾಸಕಾರರು ಶ್ರೀ ಕನಕಗಿರಿಯನ್ನು ಸಾಕೋಪಮನ ಶೈಲ ಎಂದು ಕರೆದಿದ್ದರು. ಸಾಕೋಪಮನ ಶೈಲವೆಂದರೆ ಸ್ವರ್ಗವೆಂದರ್ಥ. ಚಾಮರಾಜನಗರ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಗೆ ಸೇರಿರುವ ಶ್ರೀ ಕನಕಗಿರಿಯು, ಮೈಸೂರಿನಿಂದ 58 ಕಿ.ಮೀ ಮತ್ತು ಚಾಮರಾಜನಗರದಿಂದ 18 ಕಿ.ಮೀ ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಶ್ರೀ ಕನಕಗಿರಿ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ, ತಮಿಳುನಾಡು ಮತ್ತು ಕೇರಳ ರಾಜ್ಯಗಳ ತೀರ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಮಲೆಯೂರು ಎಂಬ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಗ್ರಾಮದ ಸಮೀಪವಿದೆ. ಈ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಅಂಟಿಕೊಂಡಂತಿರುವ ನಿತ್ಯ ಹರಿದ್ವರ್ಣ ಅರಣ್ಯ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀಗಂಧ ಮತ್ತು ಚಂದನ ಮರಗಳು ಹೇರಳವಾಗಿವೆ. ಶ್ರೀ ಕನಕಗಿರಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತಲಿನ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ದೊರೆಯುವ ಶಿಲಾಶಾಸನಗಳು, ಸಮಾಧಿ ಮಂಟಪಗಳು, ಗುಹೆಗಳು, ಕೋಟೆ, ಕೊತ್ತಲಗಳು ಈ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಪ್ರಾಮುಖ್ಯತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸುವ ನಿತ್ಯ ನೂತನ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಗಳಾಗಿವೆ.

ಗಂಗ, ಹೊಯ್ಸಳ, ವಿಜಯನಗರ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಮೈಸೂರು ಒಡೆಯರ ಅನೇಕ ರಾಜ – ಮಹಾರಾಜರುಗಳು ಶ್ರೀ ಕನಕಗಿರಿ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಜೈನ ಬಸದಿ, ಚೈತ್ಯಾಲಯ ಹಾಗೂ ಪ್ರಾಸಾದನಗಳನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮ ಜೀವಿತದ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿ ಅಜರಾಮರರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
