Sri Mahaganapati Temple – Malleshwaram

Sri Mahaganapati Temple in Malleshwaram was built in 1920. It is said that Sri Giriyappa Gowda found the 1.5 ft. high stone idol of Lord Ganapati in a lake. The idol was installed in a small sanctum sanctorum by him with the help of a few friends and relatives. The Garbhagriham (sanctum sanctorum) was constructed on a hillock in Malleshwaram in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The idol was installed on the auspicious day of Sri Varmahalakshmi festival.
The idol of Sri Mahaganapati has four hands. Later, a committee was formed under the chairmanship of Sri V.B. Natesh Ayyar. Sri Subrahmanya Shastry was appointed as the head priest to do the daily Pujas and to organise programs at the temple. The presiding deity is addressed as Bande Ganapati and Guddada Ganapati. Bande in Kannada means rock and Gudda means hillock. Later, the temple was developed at a steady pace.

After constructing a compound wall around the sanctum sanctorum, a Vimana Gopura or the royal tower was erected and inaugurated in 1964 by Sri Sri Sri Abhimana Vidhyapeetha Tirtha Swamiji of the Sringeri Mutt, who also performed the Maha Kumbhabhisheka on the occasion. An idol of Sri Subrahmanya Swamy was installed a few days after the installation of Maha Ganapati.

ಶ್ರೀ ಮಹಾಗಣಪತಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು 1920ರಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಶ್ರೀರಾಂಪುರ ನಿವಾಸಿಗಳಾದ ಶ್ರೀ ಗಿರಿಯಪ್ಪ ಗೌಡರಿಗೆ ಕೆರೆಯೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೂವರೆ ಅಡಿ ಎತ್ತರದ ಶ್ರೀ ಮಹಾಗಣಪತಿ ದೇವರ ಶಿಲಾ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯು ದೊರೆಯಿತು. ನಂತರ, ಮಲ್ಲೇಶ್ವರಂನ 9ನೇ ಅಡ್ಡ ರಸ್ತೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಸಣ್ಣ ಗುಡ್ಡವೊಂದರ ಮೇಲೆ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಗರ್ಭಗುಡಿಯೊಂದನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರು ಹಾಗೂ ಬಂಧುಗಳ ಸಹಕಾರದೊಂದಿಗೆ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಮಹಾಗಣಪತಿಮೂರ್ತಿಯ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಟಾಪನಾ ಕಾರ್ಯವನ್ನು ನೆರವೇರಿಸಿದರು. ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಟಾಪನಾ ಕಾರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಶ್ರೀ ವರಮಹಾಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿ ಹಬ್ಬದ ದಿನದಂದು ನೆರವೇರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು.
ಮಲ್ಲೇಶ್ವರಂ ಒಂಭತ್ತನೇ ಅಡ್ಡರಸ್ತೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಶ್ರೀಮಹಾಗಣಪತಿ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯು ಚತುಷ್ಪಾಣಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಮೇಲ್ವಿಚಾರಣೆಗೆಂದು ಶ್ರೀ ಬಿ.ವಿ.ನಟೇಶ್ ಅಯ್ಯರ್ ಅವರ ನೇತ್ರತ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮಿತಿಯೊಂದನ್ನು ರಚಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಶ್ರೀ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರಧಾನ ಅರ್ಚಕರಾಗಿ ನೇಮಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಮಹಾಗಣಪತಿಯನ್ನು ಬಂಡೆ ಗಣಪತಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಗುಡ್ಡದ ಗಣಪತಿಯೆಂದೂ ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮುಂದೆ 1964ರಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಸುತ್ತ ಗೋಡೆ ( ಕಾಂಪೌಂಡ್ ) ಹಾಗೂ ವಿಮಾನ ಗೋಪುರಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಶ್ರೀ ಶೃಂಗೇರಿ ಮಠಾದಿಪತಿಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದ. ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀ ಅಭಿನವ ವಿದ್ಯಾತೀರ್ಥರು ವಿಮಾನ ಗೋಪುರವನ್ನು ಉಧ್ಘಾಟಿಸಿದರಲ್ಲದೇ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಣಹೋಮವನ್ನು ನೆರವೇರಿಸಿದರು. ಮೂಲವಿಗ್ರಹದ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಟಾಪನೆಯಾದ ಕೆಲವು ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲೇ ಶ್ರೀ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯನ ವಿಗ್ರಹವೊಂದನ್ನು ಇದೇ ದೇವಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಟಾಪಿಸಲಾಯಿತು.

ಶ್ರೀ ಮಹಾಗಣಪತಿ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಮಂತ್ರಿ ಸ್ಕ್ವೇರ್ ಮೆಟ್ರೋ ನಿಲ್ದಾಣದಿಂದ ಕೇವಲ ಮೂರು ಕಿಮೀ ಅಂತರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ.
