About Temple

Sri Omkareshwara Temple in Madikeri is at a distance of 90 km from the heritage city of Mysuru and 265 km from Bengaluru, the State Capital. This temple is known for its unique sculpture. Sri Omkareshwara Temple has been built in Indo-Saracenic style (also known as Gandhara style) of Architecture. Lingaraja Vodeyar II, the king of Kodagu, is believed to have built this temple by fetching a Shiva Linaga from Varanasi (Kashi) to rid himself off the sin of Brahmahatyadosha.

Sri Omkareshwara Temple is administered by Muzrai Department of Government of Karnataka.

ಮಡಿಕೇರಿಯ ಶ್ರೀ ಓಂಕಾರಲಿಂಗೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವು, ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಿಂದ 265 ಕಿ.ಮೀ ಮತ್ತು ಮೈಸೂರಿನಿಂದ 90 ಕಿ.ಮೀ ಅಂತರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ದೇಶದ ಯಾವುದೇ ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಸಿಗದಂತಹ ಅಪರೂಪದ ಇಂಡೋ-ಸಾರ್ಸೆನಿಕ್ (ಗಾಂಧಾರ) ವಾಸ್ತುಶಿಲ್ಪದ, ಇಸ್ಲಾಮಿಕ್ ಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಹದಿನೆಂಟನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಡಗಿನ ಇಮ್ಮಡಿ ಲಿಂಗರಾಜ ಒಡೆಯನು, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಹತ್ಯಾದೋಷ ಪರಿಹಾರಾರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ಕಾಶಿಯಿಂದ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವೊಂದನ್ನು ತರಿಸಿ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿದನೆಂಬ ಐತಿಹ್ಯವಿದೆ.

ಈ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಸರ್ಕಾರದ ಮುಜರಾಯಿ ಇಲಾಖೆಯ ಆಡಳಿತಕ್ಕೆ ಒಳಪಟ್ಟಿದೆ.
